Yellow Breeches, 8/18/2008

On Monday I fished the Allenberry section, from 7:30 AM till around 12:00. The WT. at 11:00 was 68, stream was low and clear.

No hatches to speak of, except for some midges. Was hoping to see some tricos, in this one spot, were I know they hatch, but nothing. Was able to landed 6or7 with ants, also tried some beetles with no luck.

I got there around 6:00pm and saw a few rising on the midges. As I waited for dark, I witnessed a modest Hex event and some whites that followed. I caught 4 browns on white/hex drys..I felt pretty good about it. That white fly is about to pop any day now.

Paul, same for me, but that’s been true for this entire summer. I have not had my usual success with beetles this year. I also read a post from Steve, the owner of FFP with the same story in central PA, so it’s apparently not just me. Any one else experiencing the same thing?

I had some luck earlier in the summer with beetles but nothing like the last few years. There appears to be beetles around as I see them on trees and on the ground when fishing. I didn't really think about it too much until I read this post but it does seem odd. Ants, on the other hand, are working great.

I think it's about time to start throwing hoppers too.

2005/2006 were years with bumper crops of Japanese Beetles and meadow or valley streams with heavy multiflora rose along their banks (like Yellow Breeches) had fabulous beetle fishing. I see very few Japanese Beetles this year - something I am sure gardeners and horticulturalists are very happy about.

I agree with the "no action on beetles" this year. I can bearly get a look on the breeches with the usual black foam beetle. Last couple of years that was the go to fly. But this year, the famous green weenie has been a winner every time out. That's on Clarks and the Breeches.
