Fished the Breeches from 5 to 9 PM below Craighead and next to the Zion Road bridge.
(Be aware: landowner of old Zion Road bridge has posted his property which includes the old bridge and grassy areas just downstream from new bridge)
Air Temps in the upper 70s, partly cloudy, rising humidity. Did not take water temp, but lower clear flow. Some fish rising very sporadically throughout the evening, Some quite aggressively, clearing the surface (emergers?).
Tried nymphs in the runs and edges, shallow and deep, unweighted and bead head. Drifted and swung them out. Tried swinging wet hackle in riffles. Tried conehead olive wooleybugger around stumps and snags. Tried dry dropper with #18 pheasant tail bead head on point. Tried #20 CDC tan emerger at dusk.
Only picked up a few little chubs and shiners. Tough.
Did see a #14 sized light colored mayfly lift off at dusk by Zion. Saw some #16 sized dark caddis like flies fluttering in small clusters over surface. Did not see fish responding to them.
Since the YBCA stocked over the last couple weekends and there are many wild fish too, I was stymied. I know it gets hit hard, but they were in there somewhere!
Did see a couple of guys coming off the flat water above Craighead mansion at around 8 who said they had caught a couple, so it must have been just me! 🙂
