Yellow Breeches 2-25-15 Cumberland co.

Went out on the warmest day in about a week. Air temps high 30's. Didn't check water temps. Was out there with my friend from 8am to 2pm. Sunshine and no wind.

The fishing was phenomenal. We fished below allenberry down to where the first posted sign is and caught fish between 14-16" on hare's ears and small midge patterns in exactly where you would expect the fish to be in the winter.

We then headed up to the run and had it all to ourselves. We continued to fish the same rigs and caught upwards of 10 more fish each, including a 22" brown on a small midge pattern. We headed back down once the afternoon guys decided to roll out of bed.

We then headed back down to allenberry around 1pm and were treated to a pod of about 8 rainbows midging on the surface and in a span of an hr proceeded to catch 3 more a piece on sz 18 Griffith's gnats.

We took a chance and headed out in the early hours during a cold winter and we're not disappointed. Sometimes you just have to break protocol of only limiting yourself to the "warmest hours" of the day during winter trips. We essentially had the whole stretch to ourselves.

Oh and also got a few on some rs2 bwo patterns. Saw a few popping up just before the midges.

YB is high on my list to fish in the next couple of weeks. I have bunch of vacation days carried over from last year that I need to use by June. Plus, I should have my new custom 4 wt Rod and new reel by Friday. Tough problem to have.

There is lodging available at Allenberry, which is right on the special reg section of stream. I doubt it is the cheapest option, but I'm sure the amenities are top notch and this is off season. Wouldn't hurt to inquire. There are a variety of B&Bs around Boiling Springs and Mount Holly as well. For conventional hotels, there are plenty around Carlisle which is a ten or fifteen minute drive (look for hotels on the south side of Carlisle to be closer to the stream). There may be some cloudy water due to rain/snow melt but I don't think is will be too severe. It's hard to predict - bring chest waders. If it is bad, you can always fish the Run or go over to Letort. Remember, trout season is closed so you have to fish the special reg section, which includes the Run.

Thanks! Uh oh, looks like the gauge rose 0.3 feet overnight.... do you think that's blown out? Sorry, never been to the area before and this is the first time we've been able to get out to fish for a while so I want to try to go somewhere that we have a chance to catch something.

No, not at all, YB is low right now and is just starting to rise. I can't recall what ideal gage height/cfs is for YB but it isn't blown out now. It can vary a lot because sometime water levels don't rise much but are very cloudy. YB doesn't normally get really muddy and is often fishable at higher levels, esp with these sorts of weather conditions - just tough to wade. Maybe someone will get eyes on the creek today or tomorrow and chime in.

The best way to gauge the breeches is use the mountain creek gauge. It doubles the size of the breeches. If mountain is blown then likely so is the breeches

I'll have to remember that about Mountain. I've always used Camp Hill but using Mountain probably makes more sense.

It's at 250 cfs at Camp Hill. I would say that is still a little on the low side. I fished the c&r last year when Camp Hill was at 500 cfs. I waded it but it was at the very extreme of my comfort level. In my experience, 300 cfs is nice on the Breeches. I don't know how much snow melt will affect it this weekend.
