It's on a long dead end dirt road in state game lands. If you're back there and a tree falls across the road it's a long walk out, spotty cell service, and no houses nearby. Locals have a reputation as poachers, partiers, moonshiners, meth heads, etc. Names like Fayette - kong and Dunbarbarians have been used in this area.
I've fished there for over 50 yrs, since I was a kid, and never had a negative experience but in the past few years have gotten the occasional creepy feeling, mostly because people everywhere have gotten more aggressive, confrontational, and not afraid to become physically violent.

I think the stream itself has gone downhill lately for a variety of reasons. It would not disappoint me if the Fish Comm stopped stocking it altogether.

At some things, yes. I’m a Yinzer, but objectively having had relatively easy “mid-state” access to both regularly, they’re both better at certain things and worse at others. Overall, both are very good for gas station food/bathroom pit stop options though. Better than Rutters and Royal Farms IMO. Rutters is there with the layout and all, just gotta catch up with food quality. I’m meh on Royal Farms, it’ll work if it has to.

Edit: Us fishin’ folk know our gas station “safehavens”.

Meh. I have easy access to Karns (small, local Harrisburg area grocery chain) fried chicken. If you’ve had it, it kinda ruins anything else. Next time through to points generally northwest, pop off the Paxtonia exit on 81. Go through the light and you’re in their parking lot basically. Back wall, next to the deli. Just get “the 8 piece”. Sides are pretty good too, if so motivated. But yeah. I’m a Chik-fil-a guy for my fast food chicken sandwiches anyway. I’d rather have the greater variety and options at Sheetz/WaWa.

Royal Farms is fine. There’s one in particular that’s convenient timing wise a lot on our DE beach trips and we stop at that one relatively frequently (couple times a year maybe). Yeah, the chicken’s good, but I gotta be in the mood for chicken, AND not be near a Chik-fil-a. Have no issues with it, but if you’ve built it next to a WaWa or a Sheetz, I’d pick one of those out of preference most of the time. I put all 4 of them and only them in the “premium” category for gas station chains locally, FWIW. They’re all generally nice, safe, and relatively clean, with reasonably good food.

Unless, of course, it's the aspiring astronaut fly angler with $5k worth of waders, boots, sun shirts, buffs, and packs; multiple rods; full freeze-dried ration supply; first aid kid; satellite phone; bear spray; and multiple firearms out to catch 7" fish on the same trail being hiked by families with children in flip flops dragging along stuffed animals and baby dolls.

Pro gear. Pro attitude.
 
Yeah be careful out there and watch out for kids fishing alone. We used to do that all the time. Until I was at an isolated spot with a guy fishing where I had planned on going. I asked him if he caught anything and he said he did and asked if I wanted to see the big one he caught. Well he didn’t take out a big trout. I got the F out Of there. Luckily he was standing in the middle of the stream. This was on Middle Creek in the supposed Good Ol Days. Well that day was not so good. Saw this guy a couple other times once while they were stocking and another time fishing. I was about 8 or maybe 10 at the time. I was much more careful after that to not fish alone in an isolated area.
 
Yes it was a trouser trout. I learned that term because it was carved into the outhouse at Poe Paddy many years ago. Sorry I didn’t have my cell phone on me that day to call the cops in 1977.

Never heard that one before - but I like it.

Agree that Dunbar has gone down hill.
But its still worth an occasional stop for me.
The water stays fairly cool over the summer.
And it is - supposedly at least - FFO catch and release

I had a guy tweaking in a rock about 30 yards from me for about 20 min this morning but he seemed harmless- I’m more worried by the people walking their aggressive dogs off leash I run into as they are never expecting it. I had to fend one off with my wading staff about a month ago until their owner grabbed it after faceplanting into the steam.

Lots of rocks for an 8 year-old kid to throw.
 
You choose the safest way to exit, and it looks like you did. Here in Eugene, there are often homeless by the riverbanks. Some are illegally camping; some are yelling at the clouds. I exercise a little more caution around the ones yelling at the clouds. You never know what might trigger them.

Dear Oregon_Owill,

Funny you mention that. Today I was jumping around the Juniata and Susquehanna Rivers looking for a place to smallmouth fish where the wind wasn't blowing 25 mph. I found a place or two and caught a couple but decided to make one last stop at the Clarks Ferry Bridge near the Devils Den whorehouse right at the Rte. 849 cut-off.

Lo and behold, the spot I had checked a couple of weeks ago when the river was higher and unfishable is now occupied by a bridge troll living in a tent.
