Would you have turned Around?

Lots of big talkers here on this board. Lame.

I fish in a region that has a LOT of uh...interesting characters like this. Whether I'm packing or not, I try at all costs to avoid unnecessary confrontation. Meth makes people do CRAZY things. I'll do whatever I can to avoid being put in a situation where I "need" to draw. It's just fishing, not worth it. Lots of water out there. I can find somewhere else.
Wholeheartedly agree. I think my reply was just taken the wrong way. Based on my banter? I’m assuming people will hastily learn that I’m the least confrontational person you’ll likely ever meet

With that said, I’m a lot of things. But a victim of the likes of ‘the hills have eyes’ isn’t going to be one😳

Just very remote. Betty knox is a gravel/dirt road that goes back into state game lands. Outskirts of Dunbar, which I guess would be comparable to a WV holler. Deliverence comes to mind 🐷
Interesting fact…. There’s a sign all the way at the end of that road at the parking area. Kinda similar to the blue historical marker signs all over the state, that tells the story of Betty Knox. In short she was a young girl who went to market with an ox and disappeared to never be seen again. Not sure if it’s true or just local lore. Not sure where the sign came from. Maybe the state, maybe the local chapter of TU (there’s a bench w/ a plaque dedicated to deceased members as well)?

Every situation is diff. We can all sit here and play monday morning qb...BUT atleast be prepared for anything and have some sort of weapon or mace. Or anything...now im sure some smartass on here will respond my fists are lethal or my college debating skills will quell any situation..lol get real and have something even a screw driver something!!!!! Not hard to keep on ya just in case

It sure does! And, these same people often don't feel pain the way mortal man does. Folks who do carry should be aware of that, not to mention the chance of their own firearm being taken and used against them.
I don’t even think it qualifies as meth anymore. They put so many random chemicals/etc in drugs nowadays who knows …

So I want to know, have I just watched to many scary movies ? Was it all in my head ? Would you have turned around ?
I have turned around to avoid strange people while fishing on a few occasions.

As others have said, this was one where you went with your gut and such reactions shouldn't be discounted.

He didn't mention this stranger as having a fishing rod, just a backpack. Either way, that was strange behavior, and I would have put a lot of distance between him and me.
I've turned around and walked out of places when I've encountered "hikers" with inappropriate backpacks and hiking gear (i.e. flip flops/sneakers vs. boots, shorts vs. pants, no visible water). If the person doesn't fit the location that always raises a red flag to me.

I would have done the same thing as the OP.

To be a legit hiker you need to have the appropriate backpack/hiking gear, i.e. boots, pants, and have water? So, if you're not dressed accordingly, you're not a hiker?

Inappropriate backpack:
