Wissahickon Creek, Philadelphia County, 5/1/2011

Fished the Wissahickon for 4 hours this morning on a gorgeous Mayday morning. air temps started in 50's, ended in high 60's. Water clear, no water temperature taken ~ but the trout were active all morning. there were some cream colored caddis, and trout rising occasionally to them. Fished elk hair caddis (16) to some risers for a bit with no luck. Had good luck nymphing - had takes on a copper john, prince, green caddis pupa, and of course an olive wooly bugger. landed one, and lost 6 others. One of them was a beast who smashed a sz 12 copper john - brought him in and wanted to try out my new underwater camera...and he managed to get off while I was fumbling around getting the camera on... 🙁

parked at bells mills lot, fished down to below the covered bridge and back up again - there are really only 2 good stretches in that chunk of creek (runs not far below bells mills bridge and covered bridge down to end of the riffles), but it's easy to spend a few hours in those 2....

That's always been my favorite stretch of the Wissy. I would usually start upstream of bells mills lot by horse stables and work my way down past the covered bridge. Riffles below the covered bridge probably my favorite spot. Only problem with this stretch is there is so much dead water between bells mill bridge and the covered bridge, like you mentioned. Haven't gotten over to the wissy yet this year, I like to hit it a couple times a year just for old times sake.

Nice, I was just curious...I'm going to make my way over there at some point in the next few weeks. Coming from the city I sometimes start at the opposite end of the stocked section. Thanks.
