my buddy and i went to a small, but fairly deep, wild trout stream. we hit the cycle by catching wild brookies, browns and a wild rainbow. this stream is extremely beautiful and very odd. the color is pale yellow because of the stream bed. we caught numerous fish and had a good time! thx squaretail! :-D

sorry this is a little off topic but i know your familar with donegal creek. my question is: i just got a copy of the new pa fish & boat mag and saw that sections of the donegal are now being taking off the stocking list because of landowner posting. does this affect any of the fly area? and where?

The section being removed is ABOVE the FFO water although the same article says the section is from Donegal Springs Road to .2 miles below the Route 772 bridge.

Depending on how accurate my math is and how accurate the PFBC is; that would mean that the upper end of the fly stretch would shrink by 231 feet.

thanks, but does that mean all the water above the fly stretch is now off limits. i know it wasn't alot of stocked water to begin with but now there is no fishing on the donegal except the fly area?

As far as what's off limits, I have to assume most of the stream above Donegal Springs Road is posted because it wasn't stocked before now; of course below there will now be posted. That just leaves the FFO stretch and about 675 feet of open water below Long Lane (T-334) to the mouth of the stream. Based on last year's stocking limits and this year's removals; all that will be stocked is from the top of the FFO stretch to the mouth.

That would leave from Long Lane (T-334) to the mouth as being the only other open water available which is about 675 feet. This would also be the only part of Donegal available for conventional fishing.

Something tells me this will become a Delayed Harvest Artificials Only stretch or regular AT real soon if the bait fisherman howl although their discarded worm containers and snelled hook packages are probably part of the cause of the postings.

its ok geangler. you are correct iam very familiar with donegal springs creek. first off a part of the upper section is posted for fish propagation. the donegal fish conservation association plants vertabrate boxes up there and it is closed to fishing. alot of land up there has been posted and access to the stream is exremely limited. if fact i would say about 90 percent is posted. the postings stop right where charles run and donegal springs meet to form donegal creek.

this will not affect the c&r ffo section. in fact there was a good section in the special regs closed by a landowner for quite sometime. now it is open to fishing. that is good water too.

the problem with donegals fishing right now is a few things.

one is poaching. some of the farmers and there kids poach the upper section. there is not many fish up there. also in the woods there are some houses beside the stream. the kids come down and poach the stream there also. me and another flyfisherman i know have caught them a few times. but what do you do....they are young kids. heck i know i did bad stuff at thier age also.

the other problem is the regulation and stocking. the last year it was dhffo i saw many fisherman keeping thier catch. then the next year it got the c&rffo reg. thank god! the problem is they havent stocked it since. there are not many fish. the ones that are still there are older and well educated from me and other anglers. hard fishing. there are wild fish but not enough to make a great fishery. wild bows and browns.

also the floods hurt. lots of silt, too many downed trees and nitrate in the headwaters all effect the stream. thank god donegal tu has a project on that stream coming up! it needs help!

i did notice that the "meat killer" section of donegal looks the best. they made that short stretch pretty. i know the fly area is like 2.4miles long, it would be expensive, but it needs work.

the fish that hatch from the vertabrate boxes, when big enough, run down to the main stem in search of better holding water. donegal springs is an honest to god limestone spring creek. vegatation and clear/cold water. unfortunatly it has little holding water. so with all the postings and stocking not taking place, your not missing much. stocked fish suck anyways! :-D

thanks for the info, i haven't fished that area in about 2 years, but i remember fishing a section above the fly stretch around an old dam, and around a mennonite school.

Anyway, still, to have any section of any stream posted nowadays is a loss. Like talked about before, if the PFBC was more proactive in the past it wouldn't be such an issue now.
