I got out on both Saturday & Sunday for a couple of hours each time.
on both days the temp was in the low forties and it was mixed clouds and sunshine and breezy.
Saturday I started with a #12 BH stonefly nymph and a #18 pyscho prince nymph in purple under an indicator, and fished up from the Field above London Tract road to Good Hope road.
There was quite a few people about and I came to one pool with no one fishing it and I could see 3-4 trout holding in the pool. I had one very briefly on as the fly came out as soon as I struck - I think on the Prince nymph. that killed the pool so moved on and only three casts in, a decent fish was hooked and he ran straight upstream against the strong current. I tried to turn him but the hook pulled - my mistake. I thought he was a big brown 16"+.
I pool hopped up the creek around other anglers and missed a couple more fish, one right in front of the big rock, where I saw the 5-6lb lightning trout that folks have been talking about, and a fish or two rising in the ripple above the rock.
it was a nice afternoon out, but I was disappointed not to bring a fish to hand.
the next day I pretty much repeated the process with different results - about 20 minutes into fishing the first pool i tried ( below the pool where yesterday i had lost the big brownie) I got a drift that i knew was 'just right' and sure enough the yarn indicator slowly drew away, i struck and the pool pretty much exploded as the big brown felt the steel.
it being a deep wide pool i was able to tentatively steer him around until he tired and it was a Brown Trout of around 16" i think - possibly the fish from the day before.
he was very handsome with good colouring, fins and a slight kype. not your average stockie, and i was surprised that he took the #12 BH stonefly not the small prince nymph in the low clear water.
i rested the pool, retied my rig, and tried again with no luck, so i pool hopped until i found a flat with a bunch of fish.
despite some good drifts i had some looks but no takes, so i figured that maybe the purple prince was spooking them. i switched it out for a #20 black Zebra nymph and a couple of drifts later i nailed a cookie cutter 10" or so Rainbow on the zebra nymph.
casting to different parts of the flat i hooked briefly two other fish, again i think on the zebra.
with dusk approaching and a decent walk back to the car i went back to the first pool and a few minutes later, briefly hooked a nice bow - i think i am striking too quick or two hard with these small flies maybe ?
so two fish to hand, three hooked, five connected with in total - pretty good for a couple of hours work.
