This Mallard wing is one of the best I have ever seen. For me defiantly one of the hardest to tie.

I think having the right material is the biggest part of it. It's hard to get good quality material. It's a lot of work but I guess making the material yourself is probably the best way to go.

Reading the old Orvis book "Favorite Flies" you're find that the Montreal was one of the most used and favorite fly in the 1800's. I've used it but really can't say I had that much luck with it. Maybe I was using it at the wrong time.

Or place? Everyone knows Montreal is in Canada. You can't use Canadian flies successfully in the US. 🙃
