My 13 year old son caught his first 2 fish on dry flies this weekend. Last night a creek chub, and this morning a nice brown. He has always loved fishing but never showed interest in fly fishing until I went out myself last week and returned home to tell him about the phenomenal day of trout fishing I had. I could see it in his eye that he wished he was with me. We had 1 practice casting session in the yard prior to last night. He can cast an excellent loop when he minds his slack line. He was enamored with the fish rising around him.

He has a cast on his left arm so line handling is a chore, but he did a great job. I think he is going to be a fine angler.

We are going to try to find some more risers this evening if the water temps are good. If not, we will just have to get some ice cream i guess.
Or see if you can get sunfish in a local pond or lake to eat those dry flies.....that is still a mighty good time.

That’s awesome. I never had anyone to teach me to fly fish. I would have loved having someone to give me some pointers because without that, the learning process was incredibly long. My uncle gave me and my brothers a rod when I was little but since he lives on the west coast I had to teach myself.

I’ve been trying to get my brothers into fly fishing. Last week I took my brother out on the Little J, I figured he at least would see some nice fish get caught since the day before I had absolutely crushed them. I was also very optimistic he would get at least a couple if I stuck a bobber on his line and put a nymph beneath it. Well we got to the river and it absolutely sucked. I was very disappointed that his first taste of fly fishing was turning out so bad. But somehow he actually outfished me and caught his first ever wild trout. I fished hard the entire time and only managed one 8 inch brown. He got a somewhat larger brown while indicator nymphing (after losing 20$ worth of flies and leader in the trees). He also managed to hook a 11-12 Incher while using my euro rod but it got off.

At least he expressed some interest in wanting to try it again. For having never touched a fly rod in his life he picked it up very quickly. On a day where the fish were more active he would have probably gotten a bunch, but at least he didn’t get skunked. If he did he would‘ve never picked up a fly rod again and I wouldn’t blame him since I dragged him all over the river for 5 hours with almost nothing to show for it
