What Are You Tying Today?

Headed up to Pine Creek for our 27th annual trout trip on Monday. Looks like 50/50 that Pine will be high (Galeton/Gaines area). Figured I should tie up some larger flies to compliment my usual selection of nymphs:

A couple extended body mayfly with Wally wings. The body is felt and elk hair, with a mallard wing and grizzly hackle. Possum dubbed thorax. I might try a few more patterns and colors like this. They are tied on a klinkhammer hook - size 10 and 12.

It’s a great pattern. I used a small covert feather off of a Jackdaw wing for the hackle. The head is way too big on the one I posted and it would have been better with one less turn of hackle, but then the head would have been even bigger! 😉 However, I do like the purple head to be a prominent feature of the pattern and I intentionally wrap the bronze mallard body a bit loosely to let a bit of purple sneak through on the body. I do believe there are times when purple can serve as a trigger. Post one up if you tie one! The Usk Naylor doesn’t get a lot of recognition.
Thanks @dc410 for posting the Usk Naylor wet fly and advice on tying it. This one produced a brown trout last evening in some deep fast moving water.

I used a size 14 Nymph Hook.
