West Branch Susquehanna River Clinton County 5/28/2011

A friend and I went out on Saturday and had a great time fishing. The water was high and tinted green. It was also rising but it must have made them hungry. I was using my fly rod and my friend was using spinning rod. He killed me on the numbers but we were averaging 15-17" smallies with a couple that were close to 19" and a few smaller ones. We had our best day ever on this section of the river. We had close to a 40 fish day. Two or three years ago we were happy with 12-14" bass. They are definitely growing nice and we had a blast with these larger, good fighting fish.

Tried fishing again on Monday but the water was going down and those fish just were not in the mood to eat. It was a great weekend on the water though!

Great report - good to see some folks out for bass - hopefully this summer will be better than last year.

Did you mean "West Branch" Susky (which flows thru Clinton Co)?

Yes it was from a boat. Wading would not have been an option. There weren't many islands exposed. Most of them were submerged. They were definitely stacked in the eddies. Probably what helped our day for sure.

One thing I found interesting was the clouds were off and on. We started out for a cloudy morning and they were extremely active. Then the clouds disappeared for a while and the hits drastically slowed down. Then if we had 10 to 15 minutes of clouds things would pick up again. I never paid a whole lot of attention to things like this before, so I don't know how much it had to do with this but it was interesting as the bites seemed to increase during cloudy times. Wish I could fish this part more often to see if this played out like this on other days.

I noticed the very same thing 10 years ago on the Susky. I never fish there unless it's overcast or partly cloudy. The area I'm referring to is from city island up past Montgomery ferry. However, I can slam the Potomac smallies on blue bird days. Different river, different strain. Great report!!! I'm looking forward to popper time!!!
