I fished twice during the day: 1130am to 130pm & 445pm to 745pm. Air temperature rose from 62 to 76 degrees through the course of the day. Early water temp was 56 degrees and later it was 60 degrees. The morning came to a halt when a brief, yet soaking rain passed through at 130pm. Thereafter a light rain lingered through about 315pm.
In the morning Grannoms were hatching in pretty good numbers. Some other anglers mentioned that the largest wave was about 9am anf quite a few fish were rising. When we arrived a few hours later the caddis were hatching and there were a smattering of rises. I tried a variety of flies and managed one. My fishing partner caught 8-10 on a fairly large, dark olive nymph that he designed. He caught a brown, rainbow and the rest were brookies.
I came back for a second stint after striking out at the South Br Tionesta. The water had warmed a little but also got a bit more cloudy. This time the egg laying grannoms were in huge numbers and I did see a few Hendrickson duns. There were a fishable number of rises between about 5-6 fish but I chose to stay below the surface. A local spin fisherman across the creek suggested that “Black Ghost’s fish well here”. Soon after I found a Black Ghost in my fly wallet and he was right, they work well. I ended up with 11 (9 brown, 2 brook). This same angler with the great advice said this was the first night that caddis showed up to lay eggs. So that should set the timeline for anyone wanting to hit the grannoms on West Branch. My day ended shortly after the bald eagle made treetop high pass directly over my head. Apparently this is a common occurance at West Branch.
