Fished the West Branch Octorara from 4-6:30 pm after my calculus 2 class today. Started at the beginning of the FF only section under the Rt. 472 bridge down to about 250 yards past it. Didn't see any real rises so I fished nymphs and buggers. All the fish I saw/caught were sitting low in the water as well and were not response to any dries/terrestrials I threw at them, so I didn't waste my time using them. I caught and released 10 nice fish, lost a few. Caught a few rainbows in pocket water through riffles using weighted BH greenie weenie, BH pheasant tail, and BH prince nymphs, mostly fished in tandem with each other. Also caught a few browns, one being a hog that gave me a nice fight. All were caught using both high stick and indicator nymphing. Walked back up the stream as I was leaving and noticed a monster palomino sitting about 2 feet under the surface. Tried nymphing him with no response. I put on a size 6 weighted BH woolly bugger that I tie with a lot of flash and jigged it in front of him with barely any retrieval, mostly dead drifted, as he would not take it when I stripped it in. After about 2 casts of this style he turned and took the bugger and I was pretty happy. Put up a nice fight. Another successful day on the Octorara, I've been really impressed with the quality of fish in the FF only section. Swamped my camera on a canoeing trip over the weekend so I had to take pics with my blackberry, the two here being the nicest fish landed tonight.
