Time Fished: 930am - 1130am
Weather Conditions: Cloudy, 72 degrees
Water Conditions: Clear, 576 cfs, 53 degrees
Insects: Saw a handful bugs, 2 Caddis, 1 ISO, Light Cahill
We tend to fish the West Branch at Hancock on Thursday morning of our trip. I’m going to lobby to change this timing. For the last 3 years we had heavy winds and miserable conditions in the morning. I think the West Branch needs to be an evening trip.
I casted a 16 BWO for at least a good forty minutes straight without a take. In the moment, I decided to change the side of the river. I have never seen anyone fishing from the NY side. Once I got there I realized why. The wind is like twice the strength and the bottom was tough wading due some big boulders. I did have a good strike on a wet fly but I missed it. I went back to the PA side and fished wets but had no strikes.
An interesting note: As we proceeded to leave, my buddy was winding in while I waited. I noticed 2 red winged blackbirds flying toward the bridge. Suddenly one bird retraced his path and is now heading back where it came from (on the NY side). I try to determine why it would change its flight path. Ended up there was a Bald Eagle in the tall pine tree on the NY side. Maybe checkout that out if he uses that perch regularly.
