Headed up to the west branch on Friday. The water was great. No color and the level was great for wading. The rains from Wednesday didn't have any effect on the river. The EB and main stem were a mess.
I fished the lower state game lands. I started fishing around 10:00. I was nymphing using a Frenchie and some other sort of Sulphur nymph. I had one fish on and lost it. Around 1:00, I went to my truck to eat some lunch. I started fishing again around 2:00. I immediately started to see a couple fish rising. There were a couple of Sulphurs around. The rises were splashy so I put on a Sulphur emerger. I immediately caught two 18 inch Browns. I ended up catching 6 more fish throughout the evening using the same emerger pattern. The size varied, but none were as big as the 18 inchers I caught. I caught 8 and that was the best day I have ever had there.
On Saturday I decided to fish Hales Eddy. I never fished here or the lower state game lands. I wanted to learn some new water this trip. I went upstream into the fast water and caught two nymphing. They were both caught on a yellow soft hackle. Around noon, I went back to the truck to stock up on some more water. I then went downstream to fish the fast water. I nymphed with no success.
I slowly walked upstream looking for risers. Nothing. I got back to my truck around 3:00 and nothing was going on. I decided to leave and head back home. I'm sure it was going to start to happen, but I was tired and had a three hour drive. If I would have stayed, I wouldn't have left until I couldn't see anymore. I was too tired for that and that ride home would have sucked. I caught ten fish in two days. That was great for me. I also learned some new water. I have been to the WB four times now. Each time I have learned something new. That is all I can ask for. Catching fish is just a bonus.
