Weather: mixed clouds and sun, air was mid 50's
Water was clear and higher than usual, 52 degrees
Hatches: mostly tan caddis only a couple risers
So I missed most of last years trout season due to medical stuff. Hadn't fished this year because we haven't really had water in the streams until recently. Took forever to get my waders on and get geared up and I was talking with an elderly gentleman (says the guy who's about to turn 70) while doing so. He had been fishing for several hours and landed 4 trout. He was interested in Fly fishing and followed me to the first spot; arguably the most heavily fished on the stream.
My rig was a cheap 10' 3/4 Euro style rod. Leader had a sighter and about 5' of 4x tippet. Tan bh caddis on the business end. Took three drifts for me to hook the first trout about a foot long brown. A couple more drifts yielded a decent rainbow. After a few more min. I was ready to move but hooked a nice rainbow. My observer blurted out,"you can't be serious." A classic John McEnroe quip. Showed him my fly and he left saying he needed to learn this fly fishing. Would make a great story if I kept landing every fish that hit but you know...
My fishing was pretty much relegated to the fast water and runs and the fish were willing. There were pretty well spread out and by and large were fighting well. Probably missed as many as landed, but more than enough to keep me happy, especially considering where I was a year ago. A wading staff and studded boots are a big help, especially when wading some of the fast stretches with good gradient.
