WB Upper D to MainStem through Narrowsburg 7-11 thru 7-14

Had first trip 2 Delaware River this week. Day 1 - Waded from Buckingham upstream to bridge. Water was 60F and clear and too swift to wade more than waist deep. Started @ 8a.m. with spooky fog melting off by 10a.m. Saw sulphur and little bwo coming off, but not much rising. Pitched streamers, buggers through shadowed banks and some dropper rigs down the middle to no avail. Spooked a few browns until noon, then some surface action picked up. Missed a couple and only hooked one - all on bwo #18. Day 2 - Floated via kayak and canoe from Balls Eddy to Buckingham. Again water clear, fast and 58degrees. Fish rarely rising, though bugs were flitting about no real 'hatch' per se. Pulled 3 rainbows 14-17 in. each on green/black deceivers and one mutant brown 21 1/4 inch took light yellow ghost #8. Sadly, our buddy in the 'yak had the camera and was wayyy downstream. Day 3+4 were wading between Calacoon and Narrowsburg for smallies. Water noticeably warmer and clear. Pulled smallies left and right. Green and peacock buggers did the trick.
What a gorgeous stretch of river between Balls Eddy/Buckingham. Pods of fish in deeper pools were SCARILY big. Tons of shade and cover. Only saw 4-5 other FFers. Lots of summer camp kids floating canoes. Miraculous weather. Can't wait to go again!
 
Day one, buckingham to bridge? You didn't Wade to Hancock did you? Buckingham in the twilight can be a madhouse of rising fish this time of year.
 
no, jpowers, didn't see the madhouse of risers @ buckingham. had to get out of the water in early eve to go pick up my kakyaking buddies..

You must be one hell of a wader as it is at least six miles from Buckingham to the Rte 191 bridge on the West Branch.

I know McFinn, and he's fleet of foot and in tip-top physical shape like a Navy Seal! I'm sure he swam through the Junction Pool with his rod clenched between his teeth. If he said he did it......HE DID IT!........😛

BTW I fished the WB last Monday to Wednesday and while there was a very good Sulphur emergence on the upper river both days I didn't see many fish eating the duns but saw mostly emeerger type rises. Both days I floated, in my kayak, Stilesville to Barking Dog. The fish I caught were quite small - most being 9" - 11" with one 16" brown.

Wednesday I wade fished near my cabin noon to four thirty and then UGL from 5:00 to 7:30. Heavy, dense, fog rolled in around 7:00 and I just couldn't see two feet in front of me. Caught seven 7" - 9" rainbows on lower river and a couple 13" - 14" fish at UGL. Didn't see another fish caught at UGL in 2 1/2 hours. Very tough fishing for me - actually probably as hard as I've ever seen it there. Lost interest with high heat Thursday and went home.
 
Perhaps he waded in and out of his car over that distance. Give the guy a break. Or he could have been mistaken about his points of reference.
 
Perhaps I'm speaking out of turn here being that I have no experience in that area but.....

why is six miles of wading in a day seemingly viewed as impossible?
I've done more on different watersheds. What am I missing?

You're one of my favorite members, but wading six miles of that river upstream is virtually impossible.....unless you take a week!!!!! I've spent enough time on it the last two years to respect the hell out of it. It's not anything like these little sissy streams we fish down here. Before anyone jumps in with the age thing, believe me, it has nothing to do with it, It's simply a serious "river".
 
Sorry for annoying anyone with my comments. I didn't say the guy was BS'ing or exaggerating just maybe mistaken about actually how far he had waded considering it was his first trip, and the depth of pools like Buckingham, The Wall, Russ's Run, Knight's, Lake Lenore, and others equally as deep.
 
At least Afish may have noticed my unfeasably sexy legs, but let the record show that the above mentioned 'wading' was from the Buckingham put-in to the 1st bridge upstream. Maybe a mile or so? While i can wade like a champ, there's NO WAY i could do 6 miles a day in that churning river.

Okay I think you have your launch points mixed up. I'm pretty sure you started at what is called the Shehawken PA Fish & Boat Comm access. That is the WB of the Delaware, not the main stem of the Delaware. There is an iron bridge, about one mile up river, that goes into Hancock, NY. The road is Rte 191.

There is no bridge. within a mile, or so, up river of Buckingham however there is a bridge down river, about two miles in the town of Lordville.
 
Shehawken....of course. Fished bwo's over rising fish practically standing on the ramp one October day some years ago for six hours. Went to lydias for a burger and returned to still rising fish.

You'd be doing a lot more swimming than wading in that stretch.



McFinn is da Man, and like George W, never tells a lie. Shehawken to the Hancock bridge....makes sense.

The high water early in the season made me cancel out on fishing the D, but on our last trip, we caught a lot of smaller fish. A lot of reports I read and people I've talked to also reported catching a lot of smaller fish (along with bigger ones). A good thing IMO.
 
During the three days I fished the WB last week I was very surprised by the amount of 6" - 8" rainbows and 8" - 10" browns I was catching throughout the entire river length. That is a good sign - all big fish might be exciting but can spell doom for a river.
 
Shehawkin? StevenHawking? Ok, now i get it. Point was it was great bunch of days on a great river. Bummed i didn't see prodigeous fish rises, but even MORE upset that i missed a good burger @ that Lydia's place... or was it Lidya's?
 
I like that mcfinn. I will now refer to that ramp as the Steven Hawking access point. LOL. I'll agree that you went from Shehawken to 191 Bridge. That's still a pretty good hike in some fairly quick water.

The last 2 trips up, we also caught mostly 8-10" fish. Good sign but I drove 3 hrs to catch some of the big boys which didn't happen.

Or...
We could use some more formulas in hatch matching: i.e., (fly)r(squared), employing the Top-Quark approach to dries vs. the Bottom-Quark method while nymphing, even Acceleration Due to Levity when performing the Leisenring Lift...
(feel free to drop some physics in here, anyone)...
