Swung soft hackles up from the trestle above 350 on the J yesterday. Saw 2 splashy rises and was able to catch those, however, no other takes in the riffles or side pockets. Headed up to Ironville same deal, only two risers, missed one, caught one. Grannoms still hatching sporadically in the afternoon

I just bought a 9.5 foot light action spinning rod. It's mostly for panfish, but I want to try to nymph it with a sighter built in.. I'm intrigued.
I have some buddies who tore up the Little J yesterday nymphing.

A YouTube guy (Jeff Little) who does winter smallmouth fishing dead sticking hair jigs and stuff use a braid that alternates high vis color every so many feet. Using a floro leader of course. I know some river smallmouth boat guys tight line light tube jigs and stuff through runs from the boat…I wonder how an incredibly light braid would work on a tight line rig…let me stop derailing the thread.

I was on the LJ yesterday and caught a dozen, almost all on a grannom emerger pattern. All but one of the fish was caught late morning. I did see more than a few risers but couldn’t manage to get any to take a surface fly. The guys I was with managed to catch a few at the end of the day. Unfortunately I had to leave early to head home.
I unwisely did not carry two rods yesterday. I was stubborn and used my 9’ 4wt with DT, which was fine for the slower water and moderate riffles. But I should have had the nymphing rod for the faster pocket water we fished at the end of the day.
I wish the central PA streams were closer for me, but I suppose that’s what makes the infrequent trips all the more worthwhile.

Glad to hear that - I spent very little time nymphing - those random risers had me switched to dry fly mode very early on. But it didn’t feel like it was going to be lights out nymphing after that first 30 minutes - caught one and missed one. That river has been making me pull my hair out recently. I consider it my home water and know it well - but lately it’s been kicking my butt.

Bait finesse baitcasters (BFS) have become really popular in the last few years. The setups are also ridiculously expensive, I’ve never tried one. I throw weightless flukes on a med. action baitcaster and absolutely love it. I can fan cast that thing for weeks with no line twist. I’d be lucky to make an hour on a spinning reel. I’ll stop now this has nothing to do with anything here lol.

The advantage a spinning setup gives you over mono on a fly rod is peeling line off the reel when you cast. The shorter rod and the open face reel lets you cast far and accurate. You lose the distance and accuracy with a long fly rod setup, but can control your drift and keep line off the water.

Water levels are perfect for fishing in Central PA. Nymphing worked well for me today. I swung for quite a while and got a singular tug. There were really nice hatches of Grannoms and Hendricksons and very little surface activity. I worked hard for my dry fly eats.
