Valley February 26

Fished from 2-4pm. It was a warm 34 degrees, and you guessed it, didn't see another fishing freak out there. There was one of those silly joggers though.

Fished the same area as before, in Valley Forge Park, near the Library.

Started nymphing with no luck, and then began seeing a few subtle rises along with a hatch.

Now I'm that guy with a box full of flies, almost all of which I've tied myself now except for dry flies, and start tying them on one by one until I get results.

However, after reading the book I mentioned in the "Readers Corner", I approached this day a bit more cerebrally. After starting with my Hare's Ear nymph, I went to a winged wet version after seeing the rises. Still nothing. So I tied on a dry fly and WHAM! a ten inch brownie. Caught 2 overall, the only two I saw rising.

The problem is I can't tell you what it is I caught them on. When returning home I went through my books and couldn't quite seem to match it. The fly has a olive body, blue dunn tip wings and grey hackle.

My thought is an Adams or a Blue Winged Olive.

Sure sound like a BWO catskill-style dry fly to me. I was thinking you were going to end your post by saying you had left all your dries at home. If you ever encounter fish feeding on the surface and don't have the right fly, consider greasing up an appropriate nymph and drifting it by in the surface film.

Where exactly were you fishing? Just curious as I fish there often.

Wmass, are familiar with the road that runs behind the library? Sorry I can't recall the name, but it's off of the road that has the covered bridge crossing over Valley. Upstream of the covered bridge is a steel bridge (which is usually where I park) and then upstream of that is the Turnpike bridge.

My last two reports I was fishing from the turnpike bridge and down maybe 200 yds. That section has seemed to keep me well occupied, not needing to do any more exploring. I literally saw dozens of trout.
