I fished two stretches of Valley today. Both locations well upstream from the park. Upon arrival air temperature was 58 degrees. Water temperature was 60. Stream flows were good and the pools were pretty deep for Valley in June. The water ran mostly clear with a slight limestone cast. I saw no hatches but there were several sporadic midges. I fished from 7 am to 3:30 pm and saw three fish rise. When I left the stream the air temperature was 72 degrees and the water temperature was 62 degrees. The morning was slightly overcast but the afternoon brilliantly clear.
I fished a dry dropper rig. In the morning I took two on size 20 zebra midge. In the afternoon I took three more on a sexy Walt’s Bead head size 16. I lost one at hand. All of the fish were under 8 inches.
There were no hits on the drys. All of the trout were in the deeper holes. There was no action in the riffles.
I lost the best fish of the day when I set the hook in a deep hole and the brown launched from the bottom of the pool and into the bushes on the side of the creek, throwing the hook. Just seeing that was worth the price of admission. I missed 4 others.
Considering the fact that I suck at nymph fishing 5 fish on nymphs is a personal best.
