Valley Creek, Chester County 6/1/10

Was visiting my daughter in Wayne and took my rod along figuring I might get out in the morning to Valley. Went to the covered bridge in Valley Forge Park. Air temp was 79 when I arrived around 9:00am. Water was slightly up and off color, it seemed from the last time I was there. Water temp was 63. Fished up from the bridge. There was no surface activity at all. Got 2 nice fiesty browns on a #16 Copper John. Missed a couple others before a good storm rolled in around 10:30 and I left. All in all a good time even though cut short.

do you wade valley or fish from the shore? I've never fished it, but I work about 5 minutes away - and go there for lunch a good bit. Was there yesterday, took a walk below the bridge. water was definitely a bit less clear than normal - saw a bunch of fish though... I've been meaning to stick my gear in my trunk and throw a line in at lunch...

I always wear my waders for poison protection. However, I do fish Valley from the bank.

I have been meaning to give Valley a shot. Is there a specific reason you don't wade it?

Spooky fish! You can wade Valley, but you've got to take it very slow. Better to cast from the bank if possible.

THERE ARE TWO REASONS WHY A LOT OF PEOPLE SUGGEST NOT WADING IN VALLEY.

it contains PCBs.carcinogens,liver disease infertility etc.

it is possible that fishing from the bank will spook less fish.a lot of people say the key to fishing valley is stalking carefully from the bank,and to only wade in order to cross.

i do,however,wade valley.i have even forgotten about the poison and wet waded there.oops.

i see phil posted while i was typing,haha.

i realized afterward that although i DO wade valley,the largest fish i ever got there,a 16 incher ,was fishing from the bank and i once foul hooked a fourteen incher from the bank.

normally i catch browns UNDER ten inches there.

So would that be true for Spring Creek in Centre County? Both Valley and Spring Creek were contaminated by PCBs before.

I wade Valley regularly. Never thought about spooking the fish. The pool just above the bridge needs to be hit from in the stream. As to the PCB's I'm only concerned about the extra toe I grew after my last outing.

If your talking about the metal bridge your not correct. I fish that pool from the banks all the time. I never get in the water there. Also, when people talk about only catching 6-10 inch fish it is b/c they're not stealthy enough. Valley isn't a stocky stream where you can trudge around and still have a thirty fish day. If I do wade I take my time getting in and into place. If your not stealthy will fish still be caught....maybe.....will you catch bigger fish....no.

When I see guys standing in the middle of the stream I go elsewhere. Valley takes patience.....it's definitely not for everyone.

One more thing, if you see the guy who drives the green Jeep Cherokee stop and talk to him. He fishes there everyday and loves stimulating conversation. :-D Just kidding on that one....he's grumpy and isn't very social. I say hi to him anyway b/c it makes me laugh to see how miserable people can be. 😎

two things first can you get sick from wet wading in valley? and talking about pools what happened to the tree root that was in the water. real nice pool there and it moved and is real flat and skinny water not. i caught my first valley truot there.

When I see him I make him talk to me I always ask him how is doing and hows the fishing and usually tell him some stuff in exchange . He hasn't gotten rude with me yet but I have seen him a couple of times .

That was the first fly fisher I ran into in PA when I moved back here. I had weird run-ins with him two days in a row.

LOL.....one night I said hi to him and he said rrrrrr....lol then two 13 year old girls walked by and he said "hello Ladies fine night for a walk" right then and there I thought to myself..........this guy is not right!!!!! SICKO.....We all should keep our eye on this perv.

I ran into a similar guy at Big Spring a few times. Its cool if you dont want to talk but at least be nice and say hello when someone says hi.

I am at Valley fairly often these days and if I see the guy handling the fish 'a lttle too long' I will surely say something ;-).

To get back to the original question about whether to wade or not in Valley; I do both. There are some areas where I cannot get where I need to without stepping in. The key for me is to be very deliberate when in the water. I have caught some larger fish when wading but I will often wait several minutes after I have positioned myself. Here are a couple of Valley fish from a week or two ago. I hope they upload...I take very few pictures and it has been a while since I posted any.
