Valley Creek, Chester County, 4/19/2016

I fished Valley Creek from 1PM to 4:45PM. I didn't see much insect activity, so I fished bead head midge larva patterns. I hooked around a half dozen small brown trout. Water is getting low from the lack of rain. Here are some pics.

Nice wild brownies. Pretty low levels on the western side of the state as well. Some rain looks to be in the forecast later this week.

Nice work. I have had similar experience over the last couple weeks. They were quickly grabbing a caddis larvae too if you get tired of midging.

Western PA has actually gotten the most rain this month. If you look at the USGS map for PA, you will see lots of green dots. In the rest of the state, there are lots of orange and red dots.

Oh yes, def have been watching the USGS, guages on most streams in the area have been continuously dropping the past 10 days and are below avg.

Caddis have been hatching. I saw them hatching last Friday evening. I caught a few on caddis dries.

You can always catch fish on Valley on tan caddis weather they are hatching or not.

Was at the valley yesterday afternoon from 4-7. parked at the yellow springs lot and wend up stream. The bug activity was great and fish were hitting the surface everywhere. Mostly tan caddis but sulfurs were active along with midges. I was using a dry dropper set up and it was working great. only landed 4 browns but i missed some 20 fish. I think i was just to excited and was setting the hook to soon and pulling it out of their mouth and or they were missing the fly. Defiantly have to work on my dry fly fishing but over all a great day at the valley.

Chris, I was there again yesterday as well. I left about the time you started fishing. I fished the same section you fished and I had one of my better days. I hooked over a dozen fish on different nymph patterns.

When I started fishing around 1PM, I saw splashy rises right away. I figured out there were caddis and sulfurs hatching. It's nice to see some insects hatching on that stream that are not tiny.

When I spotted the sulfurs, I fished a #16 jig nymph under a thingamabobber. After putting that fly on, I proceeded to hook 4 nice browns in one deep riffle that had a log running along it. The first one I hooked would have been my best ever Valley Brown, but it got off before I could net it. It was probably close to 12". I think that the cool cloudy weather helped with the insect activity. This was the first time I ever saw sulfurs hatching on Valley Creek.

This guy was 1 of 5 I pulled out last night, they were hitting BWO and caddis.

Novo, that's a nice VC brown. It's got the typical VC look to it too.

Very nice. Fished it last night (5/4). Light rain/drizzle. Solid hatches and surface action until 630P. 12 hooked with 8 to hand. Many/Many misses and rejects. Had a tough time finding a fly they would take but still a great afternoon.

Fished Valley Saturday afternoon and landed 11 fish. Overcast weather brought the sulphurs out and the fish were really keyed in on them.

Its not to heavy but yes the past week or more I have been seeing sulfurs coming up in numbers where it worth putting on a fly to match. It was pretty sweet seeing!
