Time Fished: 7am - 1230pm
Weather Conditions: 75 and cloudless at 7am but
Water Conditions: 63 degrees at noon; 36 cfs, 3.5 gage height, water was clear
Insects: no mayflies or Caddis. Spotted lantern fly (black stage with white dots)
My father, my son and I fished just below the turnpike. We did not know the creek and there weren’t any insects so we chose to search the water with attractor patterns and Caddis. My father chose an appropriate dry fly on the Fourth of July, a Patriot. I started with a Royal Wullf but quickly changed to a dark Caddis. We ran through all options: mayflies, Caddis, terrestrials, midges, midge pupa, and buggers. I caught an 8”-9”. Brown trout on a Caddis. My father caught a 2”-3” brown on a serendpity.
We saw just 3 other Anglers and everyone was very courteous. I’ve heard people can be quite territorial on this stream but I saw none of that.
We also ran into a batch of rising fish in a decent hole. There were no insects and the rises were fairly large splashes, like the insects were big. We noticed many spotted lantern fly or fly cases on the water. Black body with white dots. That seemed to be the only thing floating downstream. If you fish Valley, tie some up. We don’t have any of these flies on the western side of the state but I saw at least 25 on Valley. I can’t believe how many there were.
I caught the brown just downstream of those rays of sunlight.
