Fished Valley today from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The water was probably mid-60's (colder when I started) but clear as usual. Thought I was in for a rough day since forecast called for sunny skies but it was cloudy almost the whole time.
Started off working some fast water with some fly I don't know the name of but gets vicious hits in fast water. I got a few hits right away but missed them all, then I hit something on a backcast and the hook snapped at the shank which was really weird. I had made it up to a big pool by this time so I was about to switch anyway. Tied on a green weenie and right away caught a nice 10" brown. Then a tree took that fly, so had to put on my only other green weenie. I caught a very nice 14.5" brown with that, my best fly rod fish from Valley. Eventually lost that fly as well, quite a few fish went for it before that happened but I missed them all.
There were quite a few rising fish all day, I "didn't see" (aka failed to notice) a thing in the air so idk what they were eating. My dry fly selection is pretty limited so I just tied on a big black foam ant. I had never fished one for browns before but I didn't feel like figuring out what was hatching. I had two nice fish launch completely out of the water in heavy current but they completely missed the fly. I did bring another four 8-11" browns plus one dink and a bluegill to hand before leaving.
I'm sure I could have dredged up a few more by nymphing the deepest holes, but I was hungry and 7 fish is a pretty good day for me on Valley. Normally I get 2 or 3. It really helped my confidence to have a good day for once without having to break out the Rapala flies 😛 . Note to self: get more green weenies!
