Valley Creek, Chester Co., 5/2/2014

Decided to head out to Valley on Friday morning after all the rain we had. Flows were high for Valley at about 250CFS. Arrived around 7:30am and fished until about 2:00pm. Weather was clear and around lower 60s. Did mostly nymphing but saw a few fish rising to Crane and caddis however I had no luck with my caddis patterns. Need to find an easy crane dry fly pattern to tie up. ended up with 5 fish all in the 12-13" range which was the best day to date I have had at Valley. Caught them on CJs, Brown and copper zebra midges and prince nymphs. I was fishing deep with approximately 8 ft of leader under my indicator with tandem rigged nymphs.

Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning: 7 inches of rain, epic flooding, entire towns submerged by streams out of their banks.

Friday morning: Clear water with rising fish on Valley, and OP's best day ever there.

People just never quite fathom how quickly Valley recovers. It's ridiculous, really.

I was shocked. I was expecting to have my streamers out all day. Water was still a little turbid but amazingly clear considering the rain situation.

Fished it Sunday with the Prof and our "newbie" friend Matt. This was Matt's second time FFing and he caught 6!! We all caught fish. Matt and Prof using Walts Worm and I got mine on a 18 sulpher emerger. We were surprised the creek was still up and green on Sunday. I might add that it was an adventure given the relocation of trees and new pools that resulted from last weeks deluge. Being overcast most of the day helped as well.

I was there Friday morning and I think VC was flowing about 150. Not ideal conditions to say the least but certainly fishable. I got quite a bit of action on a WBer but mostly short stikes. I took a few on the bugger and probably could have gotten more if I nymphed with heavy weight but somehow that doesn't seem like fly fishing to me. I will say this in response to Pcray's thoughts about how quickly VC recovers, I've never seen it take this long. 150 Friday and just under 60 come Tuesday morning. I'm enjoying my WC trip but boy would it be nice to be on VC today!

150 is fine if you have a three ounce sinker on your leader. Actually, 60 to 100 is perfect. The stream is maintaining a great flow for some reason. My guess is the amount of groundwater gradually entering it. I'm far from an expert on this, but am willing to bet we'll be hearing from one soon.

Fished on 5-8-14 from 10:00 - 2:00 . I think I ran into Fade leaving if he drives a Blue Volvo. Also ran into another guy and we talked a bit, good luck on the job search. Anyway it was a perfect outing. Cloudy, a little drizzle at times and the fish were turned on. Started out with wet flys swung but quickly switched to a BH Hares ear and a #16 grey scud. Brought 10 to hand and lost about 4 more. Even had the rare happening of hooking out of 1 run. All were caught on the scud. Largest was pushing 12'' but most were 8''-9'' and fat ! First outing with the Fenwick glass rod I got from another member last year. It was fun.
