Good thread here guys, i learned alot about presentations reading this! Could any of you point me to a diagram that shows each of the presentations described? (Upstream, downstream, down and across, etc). I just want to make sure i understand where the angler and fish are supposed to be and where the cast goes in each one. Thanks
Fantastic Thread- I fished valley today with a friend who has been Fly fishing and tying for 20 plus years. (I have 1 year under my belt) Today there we're olives coming off and around 11 or 12 a caddis hatch kicked in. Fish we're keyed in on caddis emergers. We had success swinging different emergers at the end of drifts off of elk hair caddis dry dropper combo. Caught em on the dry but when we put the puzzle together the emerger patters were really working. I caught a real solid fish (for VC) stripping in a soft hackle fished a foot under a dry caddis.
i learned a ton today about different rise forms and the up-stream and DOWNSTREAM presentations. The one thing I confirmed once again - this is one hell of an addiction and catching rising trout takes it to a whole different intensity level. btw - There are situations it appears to me that a downstream presentation is perfect for Valley.

Timmyt - search each presentation you had asked about on YouTube and you will find high quality video demonstrations of each presentation. Also knots - leaders - tactics - casting

yes - flats off of 252 down from the covered bridge (not the 23 bridge). I only fish this section on my way home from work when I have about a half an hour or so.
yes - on stealth, and slow wading. I fish some stretches on my knees on valley so I'm no stranger to steath.
yes - on upstream presentation, 95% of the time
I'm not talking straight downstream, I'm talking down and across with a slack line cast knowing all of the draw back on hook setting etc. I'm probably wrong but I have to try it on this section to prove myself wrong. Note: I got a couple of strikes on a 14 BWO, probably would have done better on a 20 midge but still, I got skunked and feel like I would have done better w/ a down and accross presentation.
I've had sucess with this method in other pools on VC.
The water on this section is so glassy that I feel like any disturbance on the surface, no matter how minor, puts the fish down.

I fished it on Saturday and literally fished the best caddis hatch I've ever experienced from about 2-5. Fish were rising in the tail of a riffle run, just before a deep pool. They were popping on top like crazy. Consistently caught fish all day and didnt even have to tie on a nymph or wet fly once. beautiful fish in there too.

I stopped over to the stream last night and fished primarily down stream from the dam to avoid the crowds, and did not even see a fish. I have seen fish there before but not last night. Also I was talking to a local biologist several months ago who I assume takes part in the sampling of the stream and he even told me that there were not many fish here. So strange because I was fishing some very nice "looking" water, anyone have any idea?

The dam has no fish passage, that I'm aware of. Trout are above the dam.
Dubthethorax: that's awesome! I had to take off around 1 o'clock just as the water was boiling Sunday. Anyone fishing 2-5 Sunday late afternoon had to have the same kind of experience you mentioned. I was so pumped to see and experience my firsts caddis hatch. The wife started texting and a lot of you guys know what that can do to a perfect day. ;(
Note: I noticed for the first time ever (on VC) two dead trout floating or sunk in the water. I know the community on this site understands how important it is to revive the fish and get them back in unharmed in a timely manor but fear there still are many who do not understand the proper tactics to catch and release.

Hit it yesterday on my way home from work. (Thursday.
Was a nice overcast day and no one to be seen, at least the stretch that I fished.
Water running about 25cfs according to the USGS web site. Water temp 56 degree on the two spots I checked.
Took Paparise's cue and started with a brown caddis and caught 3 smaller guys on top, smaller but still fun to catch on top.
action died around 3:30 so tried a couple more flies, BWO, Grif-nat all to fail, so called it a day and decided to try and beat the traffic home.

I fished from 10 til 1 today and had a nice few hours. Saw a few caddis roaming around and it appeared the fish started to move a bit into faster water - Subtle but noted.
I used a size 16 Elk Hair caddies with soft hackle dropped off 12-18 inches. I would try to extend a realistic drift as long as possible and use a quick strip retrieve to imitate a fast emerging caddis with my soft hackle. Caught a few on top and a few more on the dropper.
Fun day to be out stalking car thieves.
