Valley Creek 6/27/09

Fished Valley Creek Saturday morning for a few hours. Saw a few guys above Valley Forge National Park. Didnt seem like much was going on. Took three nymphing, the biggest, ofcourse, got off, but I was able to land two really small tout (see below). JayL, if you get a chance to read this, thanks for the advice on the 5x, I have caught several wild brown trout using the 5x recently, including two today at the little lehigh. Its nice to see creeks like Valley that can support natural reproduction, I would rather catch these wild trout despite there size to any huge stocked fish.

Typical fire red valley creek fish. I caught a number of them this weekend, myself. The stream is loving all the extra rain.

I got em on 5x too. 🙂

Nice report. I did very well there yesterday morning. Although I was using 6x and 7x tippet, does that still count? lol

I had to pick about 6 ants off my neck, and a number of inch worms.

Didnt see too much happening on top. A few caddis, but nothing major. I took all my trout on Phesant Tails, usually my go to nymph for limestoners.

This is sound advice.

Also note that scuds are a staple food item in Valley.

I have been having good results with a size 16 Elk Hair Caddis with a size 18 BHFBPT dropper. Parachute ants and foam beetles also produce. JayL, what color scuds do you find work best at Valley, I've had ok results with olive, is there another color I should be using?

As far as scuds go, I have had good success with tan. Zebra midges in black, tan, and olive are also great nymphs to use on Valley.

Aside from Raven's good advice, I'll add that many the naturals I've found recently were a dark gray/olive, which I have been tying "special order" for myself. I had never used any that shade before.

Thanks Raven and JayL. Figures all of the scuds I have are olive, maybe I'll take a marker to them and see what I can do. Another question about scuds, specifically for valley: Do beadhead and flashback scuds work good there or is it better to go with the more natural variety?

By the way, I'm cutting out of the office early today and heading to valley, I'll be there around 4pm. If anyone would like to meet up let me know.

I have had success on all of my scud patterns there, but prefer beadhead without flash.

I'd meet you if I could, but it's not in the cards today.

I'll give them another shot next time. They certainly look like they'd be real effective. I have had success with ice dub nymphs, so I know the fish don't mind a little flash.

I agree, I've noticed that I can get a little action using disco midges w/ a little flash as well.

a size 16 foam beetle and a size 20-24 midge pupa riding just under the surface worked fri/sat mornings for me. it was kinda crowded both mornings there too.

i've had luck with olive,dark sowbug,gray and tan scuds ,all dubbed with sow-scud wapsi,with pheasant tail as the back and feelers and a copper rib.size 14 & 16 2xl,and tan 3xl

it also makes sense to throw something huge and traditional around at valley every once in a while.

then again,i still get skunked at valley sometimes,so you might not want to listen to me!

i have not got the chance to get over there reacent. i going this wed if everything holds out. i might try some new phesent tails i did on my own. im new to tying so i might go to the shop flies if nothing works.

I went this morning but found it hard to get to. 252/valley creek road is closed from gulph road to yellow springs road. Any ides about how to get around this problem
