Fished Valley from 11/11 to 11/13. Light rain everyday with perfect temps. Creek increased from 30 cfs to 40 cfs over the three days. Water temp in the low 50s. Day one - fished from the skuke to mill rd. Day two - fished from mill rd. to the end of nature preserve. Day three - fished from other end of nature preserve to below Rt 29. Caught 10, 11, and 18 on each day so averaged 13 fish / day. Fly fished the first two days using BH grey scud, sz 20 and HG bead egg, sz 18. Day three I fished the pin with jig flies under a float. Twitching a marabou jig, sz 14 in black and white, in faster water and dead drifting a egg flies, sz 20, and the smallest least sparsely tied jigs were the most rewarding presentations. Biggest fish was 15”, but a few in the 10-12“ range. Observations over the three days include:
No signs of spawning fish
Possible redds were observed but in an after-thought the substrate was probably too large for trout to move, so was probably just a bare spot
Caught quite a few very small fish with juvenile par markings that I didn’t include in numbers caught above
A few spots that used to be OK are now much better - seems like the smaller fish have moved around and the bigger ones, well, are where they are supposed to be
Caught two fish with bait hooks stuck in their mouth
Caught a few big suckers and one chub, 12”, that I didn’t include in numbers caught above
No signs of insect activity or rising fish
Saw one brown that was the biggest fish I’ve ever seen - that just slowly swam away (as opposed to the paranoid little ones) and went under a log jam. This spot has the most defined undercut bank on the river with a massive log jam down stream. Very difficult to fly fish and will be bringing the float rod there in the future
Ticks are still out - dog had three
Two other guys were seen fishing over the three days
I think I’ve finally come to the realization that an adult size fish for this stream is 12”
