I had a few very important things to take care of today. I got to work and told my boss that I had to go 30 minutes into work. He is a nice guy, gave me a smile and said, have fun.
After doing what I had to do it was 9:40am and i thought, wow that was fast. Now what to do :-D
I went home grabbed my gear and headed out to the Upper Tully. This stream is a classic limestone spring creek, though almost all of its vegetation is gone right now. I was pleased to see fish rising the second I reached the stream. Looking in the back eddies I could see a small mayflies taking flight off the waters surface. They were dark in color. Especially the wings. They were BWO's. Unlike my trip to the Letort, this time I had them.

I worked the deep pools with a scud cress bug tandem. I tied the scud to the hook of the cress bug. This way I could take off the cress bug and tie on a BWO to rising fish. Then when I was finished I only had to tie one knot to get my tandem back.

Moving along the creek I could see fish in most places rising. Granted it wasent aggressive feeding like it was on the Letort, but then the hatch was small. Still fish would take them after a few casts.

There wer a few fish I just couldnt get. This one was around a bend in a back eddie. Everytime I tried to get a drag free drift it would catch the current and move. I could see the fish start to come up but them the current would drag it. Put him down everytime. Cant win them all ;-)
winter hatches on a good stream.
I met up with slay12345 on Lititz Run up by the spring house. Before we met up I did catch a rising bow on a adams midge.
The fish was a nice one but not one of the monsters.

When I met up with him he was fishing in the spot i told him, the way i told him to do it. Wish you would have caught one of those monsters slay. Woulda made me look like i know what im talking about ;-)
Anyways I tossed in some fish food and we watched the whales feed. The one brown was about 22 inches. ANd he wasent alone 🙂 We went down one hole and talked for awhile. Nice guy and i look forward to fishing with him more. While we were talking the sun was fading and it was dark. The next thing we know fish were rising. I dont know what to other than midges, but i sure had trouble using the light of his cell phone to thread a midge. :lol: I didnt catch any of them. Still a decent day on Lititz Run considering. You dont always see rising fish on Lititz Run.
You guys need to be fishing the Limestone Spring Creeks right now. I had a guy at the fly shop this morning tell me the Tully is too cold right now. I took a stream temp and up above Myerstown it was 45 degrees. These streams generally run 42-52 degrees year round. The Narrow window allows for more insect activity though out the year. The late winter BWO hatches have been great. Now go cure your cabin fever ;-)
