Time fished:
0900-4:30 PM

Weather:
Mostly cloudy and cold in the morning. It cleared throughout the day and was in the upper 50s by the time we left.

Water:
Moderate/low flows and crystal clear water. The Upper Savage was pushing 67 CFC, but the tributaries had better volume as they were still being fed by some snow melt. The water temperature in the morning was 38 degrees rising to 41 in the afternoon according to the USGS readings.

Hatches:
Very sparse midge and stonefly activity. There were not many flies active at all throughout the entire day. We saw approximately six small stoneflies on the water and not too many more crawling around the banks. There were a lot of cased caddis on the bottom of the main stem of the river though.

Report:
A good friend and I had our backsides handed to us on the main stem of the upper savage. We did not see a single rising trout, nor did we even spook a trout in the obvious holding water. I think we were just a little too early with the cold nights and shade of that valley. The trout had to have been holding very low in the deep pools.

We switched gears mid day and fished a tributary with good success. Elk hair caddis dropped with a size 16 mayfly nymph did the trick. Most of the fish took the dropper, but we had a good amount take the caddis. Highlights included a nice 12 inch native that shook off at my friend's feet and a 10 inch fish took the dry on the backside of an eddy in a sweeping plunge pool. We switched back over to the main stem, when the temps reached their highest point and still did not move a fish. Overall, a good day in Western, Maryland. The fishing could have been better, but the scenery and rest relaxation could not have been.

Nice brookies. On the large side for the square tails above the reservoir! well done.

Nice report and looks like you still have a little snow left in MD. You fished form 9-430. Wow! Curious, do you typically fish that many hours by yourself?

I find the longest I fish anymore is 4-5 hrs and most outings are 1-3 hrs during prime time but I fish by myself 99% of the time and typically drive less than 30 miles from work/residence to fishing location.

Millsertime,

It depends on where I am fishing. I take plenty of 1-3 hour trips on the waters around my house. If I am taking a day off and driving an hour an half to fish, then I will usually fish the entire day. I have slowed down over the years, and I pack a stream side lunch, but I like to fish hard when I am travelling. On this particular trip, I was not fishing alone, so it was nice catching up with an old friend from college as well.

Thanks for the update!
I would’ve thought it was still snowed in.
