In January, I asked for vacation time for the week of 4/30 - 5/6. Weather seemed awfully mild Nov through Jan so I picked a week earlier than other years. Bad choice based on the much needed rain we got

Overnight temperatures 37-39 most mornings. Day temperatures stayed chilly, some not getting above 43-44 degrees. Cloudy and rained several times a day...every effing day. Water temp 46-50. Clarity ranged from no visibility to clear enough to fish. River flows are typically 700 - 1500 cfs in the spring but rains had them pumping 8000 - 10,000 cfs. Things were majorly blown out across the entire region.

Were able to get a short boat ride Tuesday to assess damage and conditions. Looked pretty bleak.

Float Wednesday had us stumble into a very nice Hendrickson hatch that was short lived but we hooked up between the showers.

Thursday had us staring at a ridiculous and I mean ridiculous hatch. In a square foot of water surface, there had to be 20-30 hendricksons, 20-30 blue quills and a pile of caddis. Fish gorged subsurface and risers were sparse.

Friday and Saturday found the water clearer, flows lower but still crazy high, slightly warmer air temperature and less rain showers.

Snapped a few photos from the last two days. Yesterday was the first time I didn't need a puffer jacket and rain jacket in 8 days.

Vacation is important .... just getting away from work is critical. and it looks like you turned lemons into lemonade. those feeshies look fantastic... real bulls. i hope you had a great time off. hope you had some great food and drink.

I have a couple more days here on Penns. then off to Kettle for a week. then off to the Beaverkill. both Kettle and BK look like they are falling right in to good shape ... but i am on the " knives edge " ... any decent rain could be trouble for me ... and I'm a long way from home. but im opptomistic.

These last 2 weeks, ive fished in rain, constant rain, mist, drizzle, snow, HAIL where i couldn even see the other side of Spring Creek ... and then bursts of sunshine and a few rainbows over the mountains. did i say more rain??

Just crazy. and im really dying for a good curry right now. But alas ... i dont think I'll find any in Cross Fork. Maybe they'll have all the fix'ins in Renovo at Lingle's Market ??

Ive met alot of really nice folks ... and dogs. caught alot of trouts ... missed alot more ... and when it got dark and i got my
*%#ed kicked , i said " you win ". and i walked back to the truck. im enjoying myself.

Cheers!

China Garden in Coudersport has chicken w/ curry sauce if you get up that way.

Kray,

They all look really healthy and well-fed. I'm glad you got to give them some exercise. 😉

Well, the heft of the fish was amazing. Never saw it quite that good. We had several hooks get bent / straightened due to the girth and heavy currents.

We had one pod of fish that got 15 different patterns and showed zero interest. Tried them 2 days in a row and they were not having it. Other than that, threw one pattern at all other fish and they ate it if the drift was proper. The guy fishing with me (Big Frank) referred to it as a filthy dish rag. 🤣🤣

Sounds like a blast Andy. Curry in Renovo??? I need to see that to believe it. Get Patak's Original Heat & Eat Butter Chickpeas & Veggies for the road trips.

I have been really focusing on eating better lately. I have discovered it is difficult to purchase healthy food in some of the more outta the way places. I have been spending a lot of time in the ANF and find it is a bit of a struggle.

Nice pics but not the one I was hoping for.............

I let anyone I was fishing with know the type of picture I was trying to come up with for you. Unfortunately, I only caught invasives. With the water warming, I know that day is drawing near 🤣🤣
