Fished Saturday from Shehawken to Buckingham again. There were fish working in just about all the expected locations, but nothing hot and heavy, not even at sundown. There were certainly more opportunities at sundown, but it wasn't regulation wide-open by any stretch.
There weren't many folks out for a Memorial Day weekend. We saw one canoe and one group of 4 kayaks, so they weren't an issue. There were a lot of drift boats on the water, probably more trailers than I'd seen so far this year at the ramps, but there wasn't any problem finding water to fish.
The bugs were tan caddis, apple green caddis with the darker wing, ovipositing tan caddis with the egg sac, grey fox, BWO, occasional (but not very) March Brown, occasional (but not very) Hendrickson, occasional black stonefly, micro caddis, midges, and finally late in the day, sulphurs. The fish seemed to be either on the tan caddis emerger, the ovipositing caddis with the egg sac, or the sulphurs. It was a change-the-fly 100 times type of day.
The fallfish were up all day and made head-hunting more difficult than it needed to be. That said, there were plenty of trout towards the faster water, and a couple random pods of rainbows that made the fishing interesting. I missed more than a few of them.
As what must have been karmic payback for the awesome day I had a couple weeks back, I missed or lost instantly every single trout that I got to eat (somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 or so). So, to the extent that "the eat is the thing", I had a great day. To the extent that a fish not held is a fish not caught, I got skunked. I prefer to think that I must have my technique down, now, and I'm using (tying) flies that work on pressured fish, both of which give me confidence going forward.
