Upper Delaware River Main Stem 4-27-23

Upper Delaware, Wayne County PA, 2-5PM, Apple Caddis, Blue Quills, Hendricksons.

Had a little time and was in the area so I gave the Mainstem a try on my way home.

Water was in the upper 40's with air in the upper 50's when I arrived at 2PM. There were apple caddis along with a smaller, darker caddis covering the water with a few fish rising in the slower water.

Worked my way through the chubs and landed a couple of nice browns before the sun disappeared and the blue quills and Hendricksons took over about 3PM. There were too many bugs with the fish only rising once every minute or so I switched to a wet fly and had had success by swinging through the pods of fish until the cold, rain, and wind made fishing very tough about 5PM. All in all a very good day considering the conditions.

I'm looking forward to the March Browns in the weeks to come.

I have pictures of MB's from guys fishing last weekend! It's way early for that but the last shot of rain and cold nights might have brought the hatches back closer to the norm.

Was the Hendrickson sputtering or a full blown heavy hatch. With the water temp still in the 40s, you shouldn't have many chubs up feeding since they don't start to get cooking until low to mid 50s. It's been a strange spring so far and I guess it's going to continue.

The Hendricksons came as the air temp took a nosedive and it started to rain. The hatch looked intense but I don't think many were flying away.

I was fishing a slower section that holds nice browns till the water temps get to 60 or so. The chubs were eagerly feeding mixed in among the browns and with the wind blowing it was hard to tell the bubble blowers from the browns.

Hendrickson don't get off the water real quick so the water temperature in the 40's might have slowed them down even more. Hoping I don't get swept away this weekend with the rain predicted

This weekend was a real rodeo there- saturday was good and sunday well would have been better off casting in the water in my yard.
