Made my first WW foray of the season today. Union City Reservoir (Erie County..). This is the 25 acre municipal water supply for Union City, not the so-called "dry dam" on French Creek which is also called the Union City Reservoir. It has a PFBC launch and is limited to non-power craft. So, today was also the maiden fishing voyage for my new NRS Pike inflatable kayak.
Fishing was great. I was on the water from roughly 11:30 AM to 4 PM. Fishing black chenille body rubber spiders, McGinty wooly worms and later in the session, a floating yellow foam rubber spider, all tight to the banks and shoreline cover. I wore out 5 flies and probably landed well over 100 fish. Mostly bluegills/pumpkinseeds, some of surprising size for pre-spawn fish, a scattering of black crappie mostly of moderate size and a dozen or so largemouth in the 7-12" class. I was surprised at how active the fish were. We had a hard freeze here no more than a week ago, but it was in the 70's today. Water temps (sampled by the submerged hand method) were around 60 in the shallows (2 feet or less..) where the fish were.
Trout? Pfffft....🙂
