Tulpehoken Creek, Berks County, 9/26/2009

Went to the Tully for a few hours yesterday form about 9 until noon. Tons of bugs of all types but very few risers and very few fishermen.

Cast to the risers with tricos, caddis and nymph droppers with no luck. Finally switched to a foam ost BWO emerger and that was the ticket to the few I saw rising, this 14" brown being the largest. Water was just a shade over 60 degrees.

Quite a few fish still in the red bridge park area. Nymphing seems to be the ticket for success. Interesting though, I have not caught a rainbow since mid-Sept, only browns.

Any patterns/sizes in particular? I was planning to head over later this month, but last time was instructed to use really small stuff on 7x. That still the ticket?

Stopped at the underpass and fished the riffles downstream from about 1pm for an hour and a half on my way back from Cabelas. There was some sort of festival going on at the covered bridge or I would have stopped there. Caught and hooked up with about a half dozen trout nymphing with suckerspawn and a hares ear. All rainbows about 9-10 inches. Managed two suckers as well.

I have been successful with 5X with two nymphs, the anchor a size 12 and a second small size 18-20 midge. Most fish taken on the larger nymph.

I'd stick with the second setup you mentioned sholgate. 5x won't hurt if you're nymphing and I'd throw on an egg pattern if you're fishing over any of the freshly stocked rainbows

If you're fishing small stuff on the surface I'd recommend 7X

Thanks guys. Hopefully I'll get back there soon. I had no luck last time with a dropper on 7x (para trico and very small midge), and I hate fishing 7x if I can avoid it. Still a lovely place to spend a morning.

Wildfish I might be heading out there this Fri . If you want to meet up let me know. You don't need 7x on that stream .

I really learned to FF on the tully. 5x is plenty sufficient. Try lengthening it if you are getting refused. If it still happens after that, try 6x.

If they are refusing a long piece of 6x, go back to the drawing board with your presentation.

When the fish are taking subsurface or skittered caddis, I prefer 4x.
