Was excited to fish the Manatawny; used to fish there years ago when I lived in Kimberton. I saw from the USGS data that it was high, but figured since I was fishing up towards 73 it would be mostly cleared out by 10:30 when I arrived; wrong. Still really high and very dirty. I explored around and took some picture. The upper bridge; obviously redone:
The Spangsville bridge; reminded me of the original Kennedy bridge in Kimberton, from my youth:
Went to the Tully and fished in the regs section a little before noon.
Weather Sunny and hot
Water 65 and lots of crap in it 150cfs on the site, but it didn't look or feel like that to me
Saw lots of caddis and a few Sulphers, plus some midges, few risers
Fishing was really tough; it wasn't too crowded, but every run I fished had been fished already. Had one good flurry in a really fast section; missed a lot of fish though. Stayed till about five, and drove up to the big flat pool just above Paper Mill. Th usual gang was lining up, and I decided to risk going back to the Manatawny, where I might have some more relaxing fishing. I knew I could probably catch more fish where I was, but wanted something beyond that.
Water 66, and still high and tinged
Weather hot and sunny
Hatches midges, followed by caddis, and Sulpers(18) right at dark
The lower part was still pretty dirty, but it cleared off pretty well as I got North. First deep run produced two small, really nicely marked rainbows;
Worked downstream, missing a couple, and sweating my a## off! By the time I made it back up, there were 3 or four rising almost right in front of my truck. Took one on top on my second cast, and hooked another that shook loose. They both were small and looked like stream bred fish. The action suddenly died off. There was a flurry of rises right at dark, and I badly wanted to hook one with "the force". Sadly it was not to be. I went from the Thrill of Victory to the agony of defeat twice, hooking and quickly loosing fish around 9PM. Someone was having a party and there was a great band supplying favorites like Down by the River, One Way Out, and Ophelia, as a back drop for my exploits. You can't script stuff like that.
