Tulpehocken Creek, Berks County 5/29/11

Started up at the Waterworks at about 630 pm. There were a few flyfishermen already on the water. Caddis size 14-16, grey/brown/tan crawling up the waders, and a blizzard hatch of size 40 white midges. Sporadic risers, some small non-trout chasing emergers out of the water, and occasional goliath leap and loud splash that must have been carp. Managed only one LDR (long distance release), but have to say, most risers appeared to be non-trout to me. Water was higher than usual, and not particularly cold (no thermometer on me). From watching others, I did not see a lot of catching going on - left at dusk when it appeared the risers had slowed and no sulphurs were showing up before dark. Fished a caddis dry and a dark caddis emerger tandem, then moved to sulphur dry and caddis emerger, but no takers. Could easily be operator deficiencies! Saw at least one success - a blue heron caught a chub or sucker on the edge and enjoyed a sizable dinner.

Lots of fishermen down at the Papermill bridge, and most were gone when I passed by on my way out.

Ned - your experience echoed my experience from Friday night but I caught trout. The trout in the waterworks were eating emergers but the flats between the waterworks and pallisades produced trout on adult imitations. I had good success Friday night with light green and tan imitations. I only caught one non-trout (bluegill). Everything else was trout. I also saw a heron take a 14 inch sucker on the edge. They are eating well!
