With the longer days this time of year I am able to fish 1 hour sessions before work in the morning.
This week I did 4 mornings from 5:45AM-6:45AM. And on Friday I fished from 12:30PM-3:30PM. All sessions were about midway down the special regulations area.
The flow has been around 200CFS and weather has been consistent all week with mornings in the low 60s. Water is clear but not “gin clear”.
All my fishing was done tight lining with a 10’ 3WT. A generic pre made Rio euro leader/sighter and 5x floro tippet with split shot. Most of my success came on perdigon patterns. I seemed to average about 2 fish a morning. I caught fish in riffles and in slower, deeper run/pools. In one particular pool it was very beneficial to get down deep. I imagine there is a lot of fish hanging down there. In the warmer afternoon on Friday I was nabbing fish in the shallow, fast water which was fun. Including the largest fish I’ve ever got in the Tully. Landed maybe 8-10 fish.
I’ve seen very little bugs in the mornings with maybe a few sulphers randomly. Also very little surface activity apart from some rainbows randomly launching themselves out of the water. In the afternoon on Friday I did see a few sulphers, a couple bwo and crane fly? Looked like a giant mosquito. No rises. There is also alot of super tiny white bugs in the air that look like ash floating around.I have not turned over any rocks. I also have not fished the Tully in the evening this spring as my life schedule doesn’t allow for it. I’d be interested to know if there is any significant hatch or dry activity in the evenings?
As far as the fish go it seems there are plenty if you are in the right spots. I’ve landed alot of cookie cutter stocked fish. A few browns in the 15”-16” range. And two very large Keystone Select browns in the 20” range. I’ve also landed 2 wild browns less than 10” and one I am not sure about that is larger that I will picture last. It had giant, perfect dumbo pectoral fins, a clean tail and a red adipose. The spots do not seem to connect anywhere as well.
I will enjoy the Tully and trout fishing in general a few more weeks and then I’ll turn to a Smallie junkie. I will report back when I get on some Tricos. This forum helped me identify and have success with them last year. The Tully is a fun place. It’s a low stakes scenario and a good place to practice new skills. It’s meant to be fished hard. It’s like my fly fishing gym. It doesn’t have the magic of a secluded, wild trout stream but that’s not what I’m looking for when I hit the Tully.😎
