Tulpehocken Creek, Berks Co, 3/10/13

I fished the Palisades area of the Tully this morning and managed to land a few nice rainbows and one brown on size 18 midge patterns. Also caught a handful of suckers. The action did slow down after noon. Also hooked and lost one very large trout. There was alot of grey/black midge activity but no fish rising. Did not take a temperature reading.

Was it crowded? I was there yesterday helping a newbie, lots of people fishing.

Wow, awesome! I'll have to try the Palisades section tomorrow.

Wasn't what I would call crowded. Did see a few guys out there fishing but plenty of room to move up and down the creek. Nobody was at the PaperMill hole at 9:00 AM but later in the day they had it covered up.

The DH area was stocked today, Monday, 3/11/13. It received RT in the stretches designated as Sections 06 and Section 07. Section 06 extends from the first deflector below Blue Marsh Dam down to Rebers Bridge and was stocked with rainbows. Section 07, extending from Rebers Bridge down to the covered bridge, received browns. Rainbows are stocked in Section 07 in the fall.

Do you have any idea of about how many were stocked in Section 06? I assume it was float stocked? Thanks.

It is and has been for a number of years a PFBC policy not to release stream, stream section, or lake specific adult trout stocking numbers. The number of trout stocked in Section 06 , Blue Marsh Dam to Rebers (iron) Bridge, during the pre and inseason spring periods will be higher this spring than in the recent past. The numbers stocked in the sections below (07 & 08) will remain the same as in the recent past.

I would think because of meat hunters. If they advertised we put 2000 in there would be scum bags over doing it just my opinion.

Because the herons eat 50% of the fish that are stocked.

This is a very interesting comment because I was there again yesterday and towards the end of the day I spoke with a fellow at Rebers Bridge who told me he saw a blue heron catch, and eat, six trout yesterday at the bridge section. I see them there all the time prowling, and stalking, along the shoreline.

I find myself tossing a rock or two at the herons at the water's edge to move them away from me. Hate to see them catch more than I am. The comment about about a heron eating 6 fish got me curious so I looked up what the average heron eats per day. Average daily consumption of fish per day is .77 pounds or 350 grams.

It was a year or back where I witnessed herons raping the stream. I don't know about one of them eating 6 fish at one sitting but I did see one eat 3. I was amazed that he could get airborne. I was up by the water plant and could see 6 birds fishing. That stuff adds up quick if you have 25 birds that fish every day. Tossing stones at the birds doesn't even bother them. They have become too comfy fishing for the same pod you are trying to cast at.

I'm just relating the story, it seemed like a lot to me too, but the fellow said it happened over a period of time.

I once watched a white heron walk a sandbar picking up 4/5 inch blue claws. The heron was already there when I started watching him. I counted him eating 18 crabs in about 30 minutes. What I can't imagine, is that these crabs are still alive crawling around after they are swallowed.

Stopped at the Tully on the way home from work today. It was pretty chilly and the wind was very gusty. I managed to pick up 2 browns and a rainbow in about an hour of fishing. All three trout were real chunky and had nice color. I caught all of them on a size 14 pheasant tail nymph. My hands were too freaking cold to even think about taking a water temp. Warmer weather is on the way!
