Nice outing on the Tully this morning. I mostly went to practice contact nymphing and maybe bump into some fish. Also to enjoy some fresh snowy scenery and get some cold therapy. Living 5 minutes away, the Tully is an excellent training grounds. I fished a 10’ 3WT. I was fishing mostly the length of my 18’ leader with the fly line getting just outside the rod tip at most. It was my first time fishing a double dropper rig. I had a Red San Juan worm with orange bead and orange wire wrap at the point. And a green and gold zebra midge about 8” above on the dropper. I used a triple surgeons knot with a roughly 3” tag. I’m a day into tying that knot. It was 5x tippet. (Feel free to add input into this rigging.)
I began at a scenic section upstream. The water was stained. I fished for maybe 25 minutes before hooking into a decent sized rainbow. I drifted my nymphs by a log jam/downed tree and the bow struck aggressively. It did some acrobatics and I lost it about 5 seconds into the fight downstream of me. I fished some riffles some more with no luck. I moved up to a slower run/pool and soon landed my first Tully sucker that was maybe 17”. Soon after I saw another sucker splash the surface. I ran a few drifts through that area looking for the sucker and hooked into and landed a 12”ish rainbow.
Standing in the slow, deep water of that pool made me too cold so I hoped in the truck and drove down to a lower section. At the new location I was getting some sun rays and warmed back up. I quickly connected with and lost a rainbow and then quickly followed up with landing a solid wild brown. I fished some more runs and riffles in that section resulting in one more rainbow and then left around 11.
It was a surprisingly pleasant outing. I was the only fisherman at both locations. All fish caught took the worm. I saw a mink and a bald eagle. Considering it a victory. Glad I could share!
