Tulpehocken Cr, Berks Co. 6/18/15

Headed out 10am-5pm. Thought it was going to be a set up for a perfect day.

Overcast air temps high 60's.
Water at 174 cfu and temp at mid 60's, about a 5-6 degree drop from prior days.

Forecasted thunderstorms later on in the day.

Water was clear, typical sz 18 light tan caddis coming off with occasional light cahills. Cream midges as per usual as well.

Fish were sporadically rising and seemed to be cruising in the glassy water rather than sticking to a lane.

Managed to get 4 browns on a sz 18 CDC caddis emerger, and 2 rainbows on a flying ant pattern. Tried midges and tried nymphing with a dry drop rig and couldn't get them to hit either.

Ran into a gentleman right when I got there and he said I just missed a small downpour that brought up a good amount of BWOs that the fish were excited about. Duns were still on the water when I got there but the fish didn't seem to care anymore.

Saw a few sz 18 spinners too, but fish didn't bother.

All in all, decent day but not the explosion I was hoping for...maybe if I had made it out for that BWO hatch. Possibly the fish gorged themselves and did not leave any room for my flies.

I thought yesterday was going to be the "perfect" day also due to the weather. I took off work 2 hrs early and fished the Brodhead from 3-5 pm and didn't see 1 rise and only a single handful of BWO's. I'm sure things would have heated up later in the evening but I only had a 2 hour window available. Nice report.

Headed out last Friday and had a great day. Fish were consistently feeding at or near top throughout the day. Fish on top were quite picky though. Most have had 40-50 sniffs. Changing flies helped them hit. Mostly caddis hatching. Caught quite a few on top as well as bottom. It was quite exciting. Most fish on top were caught with 18 caddis emerger and fish below were with a double nymph rig; size 20 zebra and 16 caddis pupa. Got one close to net that was easily over 20".

I prefer the mornings and evenings when the caddis are hatching. I usually get there around 7:30 in the morning, and evenings around 6:00 until dusk (the caddis hatch can explode at dusk).

Quick trip this am to Rebers Bridge. Did not check water temperature, but arrived about 7 am, late it seems. Got one nice brownie on a size 24 trico with a sparse thread body, seemed the spinner fall was over. Quick release and I left by 830, saw one other guy catch one fish.
