Time of day: 1:30pm
Air temp: High 60's
Water temp: mid to low 50's
Flow: Just dropped to low 200's
Weather: Overcast then clear
Section: Water works
Crowded day on all lower parts of the creek, so I decided to head up to the waterworks section I rarely fish, surprisingly, only a few guys fishing. Ended up staying that way.
Clouds of tan midges in the air with the sporadic tan caddis.
Sporadic splashy risers, nothing consistent except for a few.
Caught 8 for the day, mainly subsurface on a zebra and frenchie on point. Had 3 nice browns in the 14-15" range nail the zebras. Most rainbows were on the frenchie. I did manage to get a brown to bite on a BWO emerger tied below a caddis emerger pattern after learning it's feeding pattern after watching it for a few minutes. Swung it and it hit right at the apex of the swing.
Made my way down to the water treatment plant and saw some occasional risers but again, nothing too consistent.
Before heading in around 5pm, I decided to head upstream to the deflectors and found that the fingerlings I was catching there 2 years ago are now hard fighting, fat bellied, acrobatic rainbows in the 12" range. A nice surprise given that most of the fisherman I see there say "it's only good from the stairs on downstream."
Threw in a couple more nymphs in the section right by the stairs and hooked up to something MASSIVE that took me on the reel and screamed about 25 yards downstream in about 10 seconds. I'm think it was a sucker, didn't really fight like a trout...was thrilling nonetheless.
Anyway, beautiful day on the creek. Met some great individuals, both experienced veterans and new beginners.
Can't wait for the caddis' to hit their stride.
