Arrived at 6:00 a.m. thinking Tricos would be on the water. Very few rises until 7:00. Then the water was literally covered with the spinners. But it didn't last very long at all. I can remember prior years the Tricos would be on the water from 6:00 to 10:00. I'd say fish only rose well until 9:00. Then the spinners were over and virtually all rsing fish stopped. I landed five and lost two. Caught some on a #20 CDC caddis and a #24 sinking Trico on 7X. I waded wet and the water was cool at 6:00 and only a bit warmer at 10:00 when I left. Water was 67.5 degrees.

I was quite surprised to see quite a good number of Iso spinners flying up river and a fair amount on the water with both upright and spent wings. A few were eaten but most floated down river untouched.

Saw a nice 15" brown floating down stream headless. Pretty weird. Watched a blue heron spear a 10" trout and swallow it in one gulp. Didn't see any carp milling around like I used to. Like to see them sipping Tricos.

I think I need to try to catch a carp on a trico. I have not done that yet!.

When nearly all rising fish (for Tricos) stopped as I was conducting a Tully DH angler survey, one angler was catching fish after fish on almost every cast. He had clipped the wings off or nearly completely off of his Trico and was fishing it like a nymph at the base of a riffle.

As a side note, a very low percentage of anglers fishing during the three days of the survey were TU members.

My Trico looks like a normal spinner except I use a very tiny black bead for the head.
