This time I completely agree with Fred. If I ever get close enough to a heron I throw rocks at it. I have seen herons kill trout just to kill them and not eat them. Many of my fishing buddies have seen evidence of herons killing and not eating fish. Before covers were installed on hatcheries, herons and other birds of prey were eating 25% to 50% of the trout crop. Hell, these birds think it’s their own buffet and we were paying the tab.
Also I definitely don’t believe advertising. So other then a nice picture or an arm patch for 101st Airborne, what the hell good is an eagle; or for that matter, hawks and other birds of prey. We’ve got enough good pictures of them. You can’t eat them. You can’t kill them. Other then tourist revenue, what the hell do they contribute to the better good. Yet they kill a lot of game, like rabbits, pheasant chicks etc, and domestic animals that could be harvested and eaten. The real symbol of our USA is our Declaration of Independence and Constitution. That’s what protects us and ensures our rights. Not some road kill eating bird. Ben Franklin wanted the turkey to be our national bird. But we’re hunting & eating them now. Larry

ok ok this is getting a bit ridiculous :-o
eagles and herons play alot of very important roles in nature. also to add to that try to remember as one species falls we draw closer to the same "deletion".
i do beilive that herons impact trout streams during low water times. and i also appreciate fredrick the report about the pfbc guy at big spring saying the same thing. (makes me feel like maybe im on to something). BUT! all is not lost people. yes we are in new extended heat waves....lower water times and global warming., but wild trout have been here long before us and so have the birds. most of the fisheries they impact the most are our man made, C&R, FFO, or any other special reg area. we put the fish in there and they are going to come more and more.i dont see many herons on wild brookie streams as i do our stocked streams. i believe that is because most of those streams are wooded and the fish are small. the birds flying overhead 300 ft dont see 7 inch wild brook trout through trees on a 5 ft wide stream like they do 14-20 inch fish in more open areas.
please dont get me wrong.....ive been known to chase herons off some of our special reg areas and try to make them leave. but to say they dont deserve to live or it is there fault is ridiculous. especailly to say that about birds of prey and questioning there usefulness. all animals are useful in there own ways. hey i HATE and i mean HATE spiders, but without them we be over run with bugs.......so im glad they are here also. just not when they are on my arm 🙂

My "to the point" statement refered to your demeamer and belittling in your post(s) not to his actions, nor did I state that I supported his statement either.
Are you going to blame your attitude on another bad day like you did with me twice before?
I've never stood behind anyone at a fight nor do I need to. Ask Sal. Nor am I hard to find. in fact, my band will be at the York Hardware bar this Saturday.

Mo, if your not seeing Herons it surely is because they've moved to every body of water I fish. I never saw them as a kid and now its a suprise when I dont see them.

Who belongs on the stream more? Us or the Herons and Eagles? Geeze guys. Think about it for a minute. The birds are doing what birds do to survive. We are out for the day, enjoying the stream and then go home to eat processed food that we bought at the grocery store. The birds are only getting their dinner from the stream as they have always done. I've spent many a day fishing next to a Heron or Osprey and enjoy seeing these birds catching fish. I can't bring myself to feel anything but respect for these guys. I do feel a little bad when the trout they are catching are bigger than the ones I'm getting!
