Had the day off so went this morning for a couple of hours. Air temp was about 60. Fished from the Paper Mill downstream. Water was a little high, or at least higher than I like it, and the water was pretty dirty with visibility of a foot or less.

Saw a couple of flies come off (cranes maybe) but no top action. Landed one rainbow on a black woolly bugger fished slowly and had another fish on for a couple seconds. Tried some nymphs below an indicator with no luck.

Fished the same area at the confluence of the Cacoosing. Sporadic caddis 14-18, occasional sulfur and BWO. Caught a couple on a 16 tan caddis emerger and a couple on a green BH caddis dropper.

Flow went from 263 to 410 cfs around 11/noon and sometimes it takes the fish time to adjust.

I'm wondering if the upper end got float-stocked or bucket stocked this spring. Seems that there are a few concentrated locations where there's just piles of trout, but they are not spread out at all and there are lots of places that are usually good that are holding next to nothing right now. One such location had a semicircle of 5 or 6 anglers around it the other evening. It's ashame, thats a stream where the fish need to be spread out more. I'm basically writing everything from the dam down to Rebers off for the year, I'm not willing to partake in combat fishing.

Below Rebers things are a bit better. You can't get the numbers you used to, and those fingerlings are still averaging on the small side compared to the stockies, but they're spread out nicely and it makes an enjoyable day.

Per TCO:

Caddis HAVE STARTED!! The fish have wised up to them and are on the surface feeding!! They are eating the larvae/pupae patterns real well too!
The stream was stocked on the 16th of April. Fish were not distributed due to lack of time from the Fish Commission. Fish were stocked at the access points by buckets. The Trout are spread out from the Dam to the Red Bridge now! Lots of fish in the stream!!

They don't seem to when there's a wall of fishermen! At least they haven't spread out much yet, maybe they will. I fished the Palisades recently, and fished the stretch from below the island up to Waterworks, always one of my favorite stretches, and its a fairly big stretch. I saw not a trout rise despite heavy bug activity, including a spinner fall and lots of egg laying caddis. Caught only rock bass and bluegills on top, and one crappie. I did manage 2 trout underneath, they were big and colored up, at least from the preseason stocking if not from last fall. The numbers of trout just weren't there. But right at Rebers there it was black with them, you can see them from the bridge. Waterworks was a similar story. Those were the only places you could see trout in the water, and there were a ton of them, and there was the predictable ring of guys around both locations.

Thanks Jay, I guess I found out the hard way. Plenty of fish, yes. Spread out? Below Rebers maybe but not above. I usually defend the PFBC on this board, but thats a thumbs down in my book. Oh well, there's enough fingerlings downstream to keep me entertained, and there's better streams nearby anyway. 😉

Fished Rebers Monday night after the family left. There were only about 5-6 fish rising. Fooled a few of them on a olive caddis and more under with a bugger. I didn't realize that they hadn't spread out much, I get out often but usually get only an hour or two so many times I am around the easy access areas.

A couple other fisherman did complain to my about blue gills and rock bass too. For what it is worth, I can't complain about having a decent stream so close to home.

I'm surprised to see all of the negative reports this year since the PFBC has amended the stocking effort as they saw fit.... (sarcasm)....

It is too bad that a good thing has really taken a dump...

I gave the Tully another try yesterday afternoon/evening. It was cloudy with a spritz or two of rain every so often. The air temp was in the mid 70's in the late afternoon. I wasn't really crowded just as I had hoped, probably because of the weather. I fished below Rebers and the water temp was 63* and the flow was169cfs, just about perfect for this time of year.

There were big Sulphurs, surprising big (size 12) hatching sporadically in the afternoon and evening with a few rising fish here and there. There was some smaller sulphur spinners and some misc. small caddis buzzing around. This was one of the few times I have seen more mayflies than caddis flies hatching on the Tully.

I caught fish, maybe 7 or 8 mostly on nymphs and a sulphur emerger. Nymphs used were generic BHHE, FBPTs and sulphur nymphs fished mostly on a dropper behind a parachute sulphur dun or a sparkle dun. Nearly all fish were decent sized browns, that I guessed were recently stocked in mid April. I caught one smallish rainbow that I would guess to be from the past fall fingerling stocking, and one larger rainbow that may have been stocked recently.

All in all an okay day, but judging from my fishing success as a whole this season, I agree with Pcray that overall the numbers of fish are down in the Tully. In the past, under good stream conditions, it was not unusual to catch 20+ fish in an afternoon or evening fishing.

I will have to admit that the fish fought pretty well and several actually jumped when hooked, also they were colored up fairly nicely, but they are not anywhere in the class of fish that grew up in the stream as fingerlings. Just my 2cents Mike.

was out at the tully this weekend for a few hours and had a good time fishing the bottom with a P tail - with a caddis larva dropper caught a bunch and they were nat that big maybe 13ish but heavy fish and pretty strong
