Tully 5/31/07

well i had quite a good day. me and a buddy fished alot of the tully today. we started up by the limestone springs hatchery and the fishing is retarded. there are a good number of trout still left over in that section. they were taking, as expected on the tully, size 20-22 plastic bh brown caddis emergers. go figure u fish the tully and they want caddis. BUT! those fish were so stupid that they were taking BWO's, gray foxes, san juan worms, woolly buggers, eggs and all kinds of flies. i dont remember getting rain so these fish must not be escapes but stocked by the pfbc. who knows though there were ALOT of fish up there. i lost 1 20 plus inch fish. now....

we moved farther downstream to the club. the rod and gun club is open and approved trout waters. didnt see many fish in there but there was 1 nice trout. who proptly took my buddies prince nymph and came off. second photo oppurtunity lost :-(

my buddy has a special treat for me. he got landowner permission to access below the club water. this area is posted but old sal is lucky :-D we got to his "secret hole" and landed many fish. all were rising in this area and guess what they took......CADDIS! the same plastic bh brown caddis emergers.

we skipped the dhalo section (due to the fact we hate crowds)...so we moved to the larger year round section. for which we did manage to land some trout. on guess what......i dont have to tell you.

i like catching trout but the upper section at limestone springs made me feel like i was fishing the hatchery. not much thought into it and there are too many fish. just didnt feel real or rewarding. there were 6 golden bows up there which were the only fish not feeding. i dont think ill be going back there anytime soon. i did like the club water and the private property. nice riffles in that area and the fishing wasent cheap. also i liked the year round water. some nice water down there. where the heck are the browns in the upper section? everything we got was bows. and i mean everything!

also i would like to thank the baitfisherman by the hatchery. i liked the way u used powerbait on treble hooks, then held the fish out of the water too long and released fish that swallowed the hook. i also like the way you kept bigger fish and released the smaller ones to die. GOOD JOB! made me sick. i know of 10 fish that wont be there towmorrow and 10 more that will be there but dead on the streambed.

need a confidence boost....go to the limestone springs. like real fishing go downstream. anyways all in all a good day.

I know you don't like crowds... but you are missing some really good water on the dhalo section. I highly doubt you'd have trouble finding a good spot with nobody in sight on a weeknight. Hell, I've been able to do it on a weekend.

The overcrowding issue is a bit of a myth IMO. Just drive from major spot to major spot (the road to nowhere to the papermill to the waterworks and then to reber's, so on...) Once you find a half empty parking lot, walk a few hundred yards upstream and it's just you, the herons (the bastards), and the deer... Even on weekends.


Except during tricos, which I sit out usually.

I've never fished above the lake, but it doesn't sound like my cup of tea anyway. Thanks for the insight!

dont think i havent fished there before. im a fan of smaller water. the tully is alittle big for me down there. i do like it but not my favorite. i like the papermill hole. the stream that enters it i have fished and caught wild browns in there.
it is over crowded on weekends.....but i dont even like fishing around 1 person...unless im fishing with them. mike was right on a differnt thread. to many guys do stick to the DHALO section. lots of water on the tully. wanted to try something new.

That's fair. I just wanted to make sure you weren't avoiding it in fear of crowds. It's some of the finest in the area.

I'm yet to fish the trib at the papermill hole, but plan to soon.

Where is the limestone springs hatchery section of the Tully. Is it above the lake, I have fished the tully alot but only from the dam down

If you wanna fish the papermill hole do so during the trico hatch and get there at first light, there won't be anyone around, in my experience it gets crowded there in the evenings

Just a note for you Tully anglers: Tomorrow, June 21, 2007, two sections of the Tulpehocken and one section of Hay Creek are scheduled to receive stockings of 10-11 inch rainbow trout that were unallocated or "extras" remaining in one of the PFBC hatcheries. The section below the DH area will be stocked as well as the section in the western part of Berks Co that runs from the county line down to Charming Forge. Additionally, Hay Creek will be stocked in the walk-in segment and possibly in Birdsboro. Of course, the final destination of these trout will depend upon water temps at the time of stocking, but the intent at present is to stock all three stream sections (2 streams) mentioned above.

where is the walk in section of hay creek? Is that anywhere close to where 82 dead ends?

The northern end of the closed section of 82. In birdsboro. If they stock in town, there will be fresh fish sticks from here to the mouth at the schuylkill (near 422).

If I remember correctly, you fished it about a mile upstream of this section.

Head into town and follow 82 south through town until it closes. There's a park right there.

I checked the PFBC stocking schedule, which was supposed to be updated due to the "bonus" surplus of fish, and it said that the Tully and Hay were going to be stocked with bows on the 28th, not the 21st.

You just got info to the contrary from the regional fisheries biologist. He might be right. :lol: On a side note, those pally's below limestone springs are suckers for a 16 BHPT. At least the 3 by the bridge are. :-D It does, however feel like a petting zoo up there. I'll have to hit Jay up soon to guide me on the rest of the creek, as I am unfamiliar with it.

Hey, all I have is the following list of demands:

My mistake and my apologies to all. I had a verbal that the aforementioned Tully and Hay Ck stockings would be on Thur, June 21, but I neglected to check the details on the written notice. The stockings are actually on Thur, June 28. Again, I am sorry if you ran out to any of the creeks because of my error.
