I have done some funny videos using them. Basically busting balls of the rafters that I run into on the Lehigh. My IG handle is FlyFishingEducator if you ever want to check out the goofy crap I make.

Inaccurate representation…. That boat ramp is in way too good of shape. Gotta make it look more like the one in Buckingham that destroys my drift boat and trailer despite them having plenty of money to pay WCO’s to sit there and bust people’s ****s for not having the right life jackets seemingly every time I float.

I believe the internet is the bigger culprit. I didn't even know a Class A list existed until the internet became popular.

Dear wildtrout2,
I think you are on to something there! In 1993 I walked into the District 7 NYDEC Office in Kirkwood NY and picked up a stapled together list of all trout streams in NY State with documented natural production.
It weighed about 2 pounds and I've long since lost it. But I checked out a lot of them in my days in the Empire State.
But back to PA. In college I got an actual book published by the PAFBC that listed every single public water in every county, and the species present. It was a small book, maybe 5"x7" or 6"x8" and 1/2 inch thick. I lost that between numerous moves over the years, but I can literally see it in my hands right now.
I'd give anything for a wayback machine!

Ten years earlier in 1983, was an especially informative year for me...
I have a 1" thick coil bound book produced by the State of NJ Dept of Environmental Protection & Fish Game from 1983 when NJ was considering stocking pacific salmon in the Delaware. It lists all the NJ trout streams AND the wild trout streams.
When I lived in the Poconos, I used this guide to explore wild trout streams on the "Joisey" side of the Delaware...
1983 was also when "Operation Future" was talked about in every issue of the PA Angler Magazine. In the April 1983 issue, they published a guide called "Trout Fishing in Pennsylvania" (attached below) with lists of stocked streams but more importantly, a color coded map that showed some of the Class A streams surveyed up to that point.
That "guide" was also available as a separate brochure. A crumpled copy of that brochure was in my vest for a LONG time to help me find Class A streams.
Finally, around the same time, I contacted Delano Graff, Director of Fisheries for the PFBC to get a Class A list. I can't remember if it was a phone call or written correspondence, however it WASN'T an email. 🙂
He mailed the type written two page list that only included the stream name, county and the length of the section.
Here's that list:
Wusses today need apps, maps, GPS coordinates and Internet spot burners to scout streams. Way back when we used paper maps, horses, divining rods & instinct...
AND in the off season we walked three miles to school UPHILL in the snow!! 😉

Parts of our group (not me personally) did get checked while fishing First Fork a few weeks ago, FWIW.
Last time I saw a WCO before that was on BFC, probably 4 or 5 years ago. Was not checked, just asked the fishing was.
My license was checked this spring on a small, unstocked brookie stream.
The list in #48 above is the original Class A list of streams or stream sections that were removed from the stocking program under Executive Director Ralph Abele and the Commissioners at that time. Removal of a stream section meant removal of the entire stream in some cases and removal of the just the Class A section in other cases on longer streams while the remainder continued to be stocked. Shown are 99 sections and if I am wrong that they were all formerly stocked sections, I am only off by 3-6 sections. The stocked sections on the table were all removed at once from the stocking program. Imagine that happening today.
Thank you, Bamboozle, for digging into your archives. This brought back great memories of surveys and the agency’s strength at that time.
As for the stream surveys that yielded these Class A’s, I had the enjoyable privilege of leading or assisting with nine or ten of those, some of them very famous streams, in Centre, Clinton, Cumberland, Juniata, and Luzerne Co’s. Although I got to participate in a number of NW Pa surveys on some beautiful streams, none of those produced Class A populations.

Last time I was checked was at the Walnut Marina, about 10 years ago. The WCO didn't even get out of his truck, just yelled at me to come to him. Was kinda insane, he wouldnt even get out of the truck.
However, I have met upstanding WCO officers on the Clarion. They willingly gave me a ride, when I was in need of one, a couple weeks ago. So, i guess we get the good with the bad.

Probably the funniest instance of getting checked was getting waived down while we were in the middle of a lake and it took us like 15 minutes to get to the dock because the wind.
Apparently I'm REALLY fishing off the beaten path (definitely not the case), because I've never even run into a WCO let alone had my license checked in the 15+ years I've been fishing.
Meanwhile I get my hunting license checked by the Game Commission every other year.
Glad to hear they do exist out in the wild though, I was beginning to think they were just a myth.

The web is a double edged sword. On one hand it has helped me find good fishing, on the hand everyone else has access to the same info.
The internet has definitely opened a lot of eyes to the extent of wild trout opportunities in our state, for better or for worse.

Yeah I’m good on this opportunities not being as well advertised personally. Anybody with drive could still have found them, the difference is now we’re algorithmically slapped across the face with it every time we open social media.

Admitttedly, I only fish ClassA streams off the beaten path, but in 23 years I've never seen a WCO, let alone been checked by one.
I deer hunt in a state park and in that same 23 years, I was checked for my license ONE time, and it was at the parking area. I'm okay with not being checked, but it makes you wonder "who's minding the mint"?
