Trout Run Lancaster County 5/21/08

Well steve98 heres a stream report :-D :lol: and i apologize for my lack of posting stream reports....but thats about to change again :-D

I fished Trout Run in Lancaster County today from 12- 3 pm. I met a very nice landowner downstream from Pennsy Road. I politely asked him if I could fish his property down to Climbers Run. I promised to pick up some of the trash (if any) that I encountered. He allowed me access and i was grateful.

The water is a little high and off color due to the periodic stroms we have been having. Sulphurs were coming off at a very high rate but no fish were rising to them. No doubt because of the high water. I put on a size 10 BH crystalflash olive bugger and caught 7 stocked rainbows and about 12 wild brookies. It was a good 3 hours of fishing.

Arriving at Climbers Run the section of open (unposted water) is very small. I did catch a few stockers and a few wild brookies in Climbers Run. The Sulphurs were coming off of Climbers Run too.

I worked my way back upstream and thanked the landowner with a handful of worm containers and coke cans in my hands. He smiled and thanked me for picking up trash. YOU MUST ASK BEFORE ENTERING THIS PROPERTY. while im not sure about that its always a good idea to do so.

This section is moot though. No doubt the best fishing is above Pennsy Road upstream. The only reason I tried this lower water wasw to see Climbers Run and to fish the remaining wild trout water of Trout Run that I have not fished yet.

Interestingly enough, when i got back to my car at the Trout Run Nature Preserve a group of kids with and few adults came out of the old railroad tunnel. They had buckets and electro-shock equipment. I asked them what they found and he said there a quite a few nice fish upstream in the Nature Preserve. This maybe a place to go this weekend to get a few trout. Help the brookies take a stocker! for anyone that hasent fished this stream yet and is close to Lancaster County or in the county...you should check it out...its gorgous! :-D tightlines!

Hey Sal. I have tried to fing a good spot on Trout run that is open to the publice, but all the places that are open I didn't see anything. I fished from where it empties into the Conestoga, all the way up the lower end of the "preserve". Am I too far downstream? Should I be trying ABOVE the preserve? PM me if you prefer. I appreciate any info you have as I found this stream to be truly BEAUTIFUL and looked like it should hold some decent trout. I Did see LOTS of suckers!

OOOPPSSS, I was thinking of Lititz run, not trout run, my mistake. I've never fished Trout run but looks like I'll have to give it a go! Thanks for the report, Sal.

Yes on Lititz Run you are too far downstream. Not by much though. Working your way up from the preserve you will see a farmers driveway that crosses the stream. It will be the very first one. That is the Hess farm and the beginning (or the end either way u look at it) of the C&R area. It extends up quite a few miles. Be aware though (you can ask squaretail) you might not see any fish anyways unless you have the secret pellet hatch. Mainstays works just fine :lol: we would fish a hole and not catch any, throw in some pellets and watch the fish fly! Anyways Lititz Run is a wonderful stream but Trout Run is the best wild trout stream in the County and it gets stocked also. You have to check it out sometime. Your welcome for the stream report bud! Thanks Sal. Can you suggest how to get there and where to start? I checked out the photos you have of trout run and they look like serious wilderness! I'm not even sure where trout run is! I thought it was close to downtown Lancaster but judging by your photos, it looks like it pretty far from civilization. On the subject of "pellet hatch" Squaretail has tutored me well on that subject...hehehehe.

Trout Run Preserve

My directions are as follows:

Taking 501 into Lancaster go to the end of Lancaster where 222 splits with 324. Take 324 South the whole way to Pennsy Road. Turn Left onto Pennsy Road and watch of the Trout Run nature preserve. It will be on your right. The parking area is small but im sure you will find a spot. I fish upstream from there anyways good luck man! :-D

Hey Sal! I finally made it out to Trout Run. I blew right past it the first time, but found it on the way back. What a beautiful water! I fished upstream about a 1/4 mile and nothing, but I saw a few wild brookies! I went back downstream to the tunnel and caught 3 rainbows (about 8-9 inches and very colorful) on San Juan Worm and then I saw one rising at the tail end of the pool, I put on an Elk Hair Caddis and BAM....an 8" Brookie. Made my day! Thanks for sharing such a Gorgeous little place. I'd like to try going further upstream sometime, any promise in that?
