fished a little trib to the neshannock, some small suckers, 14 inch holdover brown from a hole that was deeper than it was wide. then walked upstream a bit, saw a fish feeding at the head of a small pool, snuck upstream and let my soft hackle drift down past it, then started to strip it in and he took, got him to my feet and he got off, but I got a GOOD look at him, par marks, nice pink stripe down the side, about 8-9 inches long, a gorgeous wild rainbow. this is the 2nd time I've caught a wild bow in a stream that wasn't supposed to have any. but since they stock the neshannock with rainbows all the time, makes sense that a couple must have headed up this stream and one time and reproduced.
the other one I caught a couple years ago in little sandy creek.
 
yep, the fly fishing section near polk. I caught a wild rainbow about 2 years ago there, it was only about 6 inches long, feisty little bugger. I've also got a couple wild browns there. they heavily stock it, but it would probably be a better stream if they would quit the stocking.
 
I met PennKev there last week and fished upstream of the FFO on Little Sandy. It was a nice little stream. I caught one little brown and Kev got the skunk (thanks for the guiding!). He knows the Neshannock drainage fairly well and has caught browns in there, which was the purpose of him taking me out. But I'm sure the rainbows peaked a few peoples interest here. Very nice find. I can't wait to explore the area a bit more.


btw, nice meeting you a few weeks ago. If you ever want some company on those little tribs, let me know ;-)
 
you bet ryan! I can think of a few that you might like. might have to plan a little recon mission one of these weekends, I'm sure a couple other guys might be interested as well. we can always split up and explore a couple different streams or whatever, unless we get some good rains up at erie!! as for little sandy, it is a nice little stream and a nice setting. if I ever hit the lottery, I'd buy the old state hospital in polk and turn it into a wayward home for flyfishers!! ok, wayward home and brewery, or maybe distillery!

Hey now... I got that colorful holdover and another smaller fish when we stopped in the special regs area! Like I said though, I would've gladly traded that fish for a 4" wild brown.

Yeah, I balked at fishing the Neshannock tribs due to the low and clear conditions and the fact I had done well recently up at Sandy. Ironically, we might have done better with plan "A". But, at least we got to watch some fish, eh?

I was referring to the upstream section of little sandy... You can post that picture of your fish if you're so proud of it. It was a nice one.

Yeah those were some nice fish. They just didn't want a taste of the weenie that day. I think the trees around that area are "beginning to look a lot like Christmas" with all my flies that are now stuck in them as decorations.
 
Little Sandy also has wild brookies. Some years they migrate into the special regs area. I've caught them throughout the stream. But haven't seen any in many years in the lower reaches -- actually since the mine went in up there. Have any of you?
 
Yeah GG I was going to bring that up.

I used to go to a church camp up there called Seneca Hills.

It is right on the little sandy. Really nice fishing up there. theres is a tiny trickle of trib running through that camp and when i was little there were beautiful little fish in there.

I have no idea they were native brook trout hahahaha.
 
Bikerfish. I am there for the exploration. Let me know when you want to do it. I want to explore that whole area.
 
will do. not sure if it will be this year or next spring, of course, if we get some decent weather over the winter, I'm game. just don't want to trudge hours through the snow and those fish don't get too active when the water is 33 degrees!! hopefully we'll still have some nice weekends.
 
if any of you guys ever want to spend a miserable winter day looking over maps of those areas. we could meet up at a bar/coffeeshop/restaurant and spend an afternoon doing some "virtual" fishing. we could pick someplace central to us. I know ryan is in beaver falls, millertime is in butler, and I think pennkev is in new castle?? anyways, let me know what ya think.
 
I'd be in for this...does Cranberry work as a central location for everyone or is there someplace better?

cranberry works for me too. gazeteers are good maps, also usgs topo maps are excellent. if no one has any for the areas we've been talking about, maybe I'll order some, been wanting to get more maps anyways!
 
We can hit up one of the Starbucks or one of the thousands of restaurants out there. Whichever is everyone's preference. Thinking Smokey Bones has large tables or big bar areas. They also have WiFi I *think*.

Gazetteer is best for me, I'll bring mine. I'm sure I'll want to mark it up with some highlighters. My buddy has the Higbee Map and it's nice too but more of a wall map or one you'd leave at camp IMHO.

Oh, and by the way, I have caught a ton of brookies the last two years in Little Sandy. Only a couple in the FFO area, but plenty upstream and in the headwaters.

how far up sandy did u guys go , some of the water is low and moving but not good holding water above the ffo section , i caught 2 kids with a bunch of fish on stringer this summer there , from that day on the fishing hasn't been as good as it had been before that , i have a feeling they kept way more than a couple stringers
